Is Greece on your bucket list? The magical Mediterranean paradise attracts travelers from all over the world, but with over 220 inhabited islands, how do you possibly know where to start? We’re beginning our travel guide through the Greek Islands with the island of Corfu. Here’s everything you need to know about planning your bucket list beach getaway!
Where is Corfu?
Corfu is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea, located just off the northwest coast of the mainland and not too far from neighboring Albania. There is a small airport on the island where you can fly from many cities in the world via Athens International Airport, or you can opt for a scenic hour and forty-five minutes ferry ride from Athens to the port city of Corfu.
Where to stay in Corfu
For a five-star luxury experience, Dreams Corfu Resort & Spa offers premium accommodations with spectacular seaside views. The resort features sleekly designed swimming pools, best-in-class service, and Unlimited-Luxury® amenities, including unlimited dining and a selection of included beverages. It’s located in the quaint village of Gouvia, just ten minutes outside the island’s main town of Corfu.
Top beaches in Corfu
One of the main reasons people flock to Corfu is for its magnificent beaches, and with over 130 miles of coastline, there are plenty of unique shorelines to explore.
Paleokastritsa
If you’re looking for seaside serenity, look no further than Paleokastritsa. The Tale of the Odyssey has it that this is the beach where Odysseus met his princess after sea god Poseidon turned his ship into stone. Today, it’s a picturesque beach with sunbeds, restaurants, and water taxis floating in the harbor that can take you to explore the beach’s surrounding coves.
Canal d’ Amour
Outside the village of Sidari is the famous Canal d’ Amour, aka the Channel of Love. This natural wonder was formed by eroded sandstone, leaving behind a narrow channel and a small sandy beach. Legend has it that if a couple swims in the channel, they’ll stay in love forever, so the beach is a hot spot for couples and honeymooners visiting the island.
Porto Timoni
As one of the island's most photographed beaches, Porto Timoni surely won’t disappoint. Just beware, it’s a bit of a hike! So, bring a pair of tennis shoes and some water to enjoy your hike down to this double-bay beach. Unlike Paleokastritsa, this beach doesn’t have restaurants and vendors along its coast, just crystal waters and unparalleled island beauty
