Spain is a holiday hotspot in Europe for many reasons–the culture, the weather, and of course, the beaches! And while Spain’s coast is dotted with many fabulous stretches of sands, its island territories are where vacationers tend to flee for some seaside sunshine.

The Balearic Islands, located in the western Mediterranean Sea, is a short trip from the Spanish mainland. Further south off the coast of Africa sits the Spanish Canary Islands, which offer vast views of the Atlantic Ocean. Which island is right for you? Well, we’re breaking down two of the most popular destinations within their respected archipelago: Tenerife of the Canaries vs. Mallorca of the Balearics!

Tenerife

As the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is frequented by thousands of travelers year-round. The island is known for its “eternal spring,” so it’s especially popular during the winter to escape continental Europe's chilly temperatures. Many of its visitors tend to flock to the island, check in to their resort, and revel in relaxation all vacation long. However, there is much more to Tenerife if you choose to venture past the pool.

Tenerife’s volcanic landscapes give the island plenty of variety, with black sand beaches to the south and towering Anaga Mountains to the north. And although it’s the largest of the Canary Islands, it still only takes about an hour to travel from the more touristy southern region to the mountain villages on its northern coast. We recommend spending a day hiking or driving through the island's scenic vistas if you’re looking for some activity on your getaway.

But if you want to spend all day in a lounge chair, we get it, and there are plenty of fabulous resorts to choose from, too. For a family-friendly getaway, Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort & Spa offers luxury services and accommodations designed for your family’s enjoyment. For an adults-only ambiance, try Riu Arecas for serene Atlantic views and numerous on-site amenities.

Mallorca

The Balearic Islands are comprised of over 150 islands and islets, but only five are inhabited. Mallorca is the largest of the islands, hence its Spanish name of Majorca translating to the “large one,” and you can find everything you long for in a Mediterranean vacation on this 1,405 mi2 oasis.

Mallorca’s a beloved summertime playground renowned for its chic vacation vibe, picturesque beaches, and old-world charm. Here you’ll find soft sandy beaches in hues of white and yellow and charming cobblestone streets scattered with cafes and trendy beach clubs. It’s not nearly as rowdy as neighboring Ibiza, but there is still a strong pulse of nightlife on the island.

For a romantic couples retreat, visit Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa. Nestled in the peaceful coastal village of Paguera, this castle-style resort is an idyllic adults-only escape set along the spectacular Mediterranean Sea. But if you want to be in the center of the action, opt for a stay in the island’s capital of Palma. Riu Festival is a short walk to the beach and offers nearby access to nonstop excitement.
