Enjoyable stay at El Portillo
We enjoyed Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo in mid-December. We have overall very positive impression. Very beautiful and well maintained property: clean, green, compact and convenient. Rooms are a bit dated but everything worked well: AC is efficient and quiet, safe, TV, mini fridge restocked daily. Buffet restaurant is the best, never disappointed. Variety and quality of food is amazing. We tried only one ala cart - Le Terrine. Presentation was beautiful, tenderloin was good, but more the medium than medium-rare. Red snapper was raw. Contrary, next day in the buffet the red snapper was outstanding. There was also grouper every day in buffet. We also tried lobster dinner on the beach (UD$110 per couple minus 20% discount) which was complete disappointment. Lobster was burned and black smoked. People at the next table had it raw. Lesson learned, stay with the buffet and you will be happy. Bars are everywhere, bartenders work fast, and there is good selection of drinks. Some special brands are at the extra price. Beech is nice, and kept very clean. There are lots of palapas and chairs, but people tend to reserve them early. Despite of this, you can always find a chair and a shady spot under the trees. There are some corals in the water near the hotel. But the beech is very long, and you can find yourself a good spot to swim. Housekeeping and Front desk work well and promptly respond to any request. My special thanks goes to Air Canada rep Lucien Belton. On the way to the airport we found that we’ve lost a cellphone. Lucien made some calls, the phone was found and delivered to us prior to departure. Thanks!

Great vacation, had a wonderful time. Would recommend this resort.
Let me start from the beginning. Upon arrival check in was very efficient. We had a welcome cocktail and great help at the check in desk. Shout out to Danny and Yoyley. We did upgrade our room, and we were very satisfied with building 8 second floor. Our friends were 2 doors away which was so great. Short walk to really everything. The lobby is beautiful and had a great Christmas Tree. The weather was a bit rainy but I would think this is to be expected in December. When it rains, it rains so take your umbrella supplied in your room just in case. We met a lot of new friends and overall the population of the tourists was very nice. How could you not be with the sun, fun ,food and etc. We did 3 al le carte's The Portifino was great as I remembered it from last visit and the Le Terrine was also good. You have to love meat to enjoy the outdoor restaurant over the water....it just doesn't stop coming your way. The pools are clean and cool just as I like them. They had fun games to play during the day or you could just relax on the beach. Beach towels are on chairs still have not been addressed and should be corrected. Who wants to get up at 5 am to place a towel on a chair. That is just stupid. One of my favourite beach's in the DR for certain you walk until you drop. Also you can walk into Las Terranes if you have the stamina and take a cab back. We visited a local school to drop off our knapsacks of goodies for the children. They were so appreciative. What a great day! Do experience the town it is something to see. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff here. Everyone single one of them work so hard to make your stay perfect. If you are uncertain about anything just ask.....you will get great results. The coffee is hot and the drinks are cold, you must try the chocolate monkeys. I need to mention the great reception we had with Youley( I and so sorry I do not know how to spell your name). I am also sad you were not working the day we flew out as I wanted to personally thank you. Also a shout out to Dominique( again not spelling this name correctly) he calls himself the only Greek at the Italian restaurant. My celebration for my birthday will not be soon forgotten, you made it so special for me and my friends. On the negative I can really only say a couple of things. Maybe get a little better pillow for the beds. Yes the lighting is dim in the rooms and could use improvement. Water pressure was a bit dicy but that is expected as well. Do put your bug spray on the first day/night and avoid those nasty bites. But that being said they did not bother everyone. I love my holiday with you and the resort just as much as the last time. One little hint for you travelers to note if you change your email address they do not recognize you as a repeat guest, but they also fixed that for me at the front desk. It was hot hot hot and a lovely time had by myself and friends.

Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo not a 4.5 stars
We were in building 2. It was the best location, close to restaurant, lobby, pool and beach. The food is good but the same all the time. We had to choose and pick for some variety. The internet is slow and unstable, on and off all the time. They have a fee if you want a better internet. In our building, water was coming from the ceiling when it rained. We called maintenance and on one room they gave towels for the floor and on the other one, they said it was the AC and the maintenance guy said it was fixed. But with the next rain, it leaked again. This situation needs to be fixed because of the mold. This place is getting old fast. It needs to be upgraded or downgrade the stars. On another note, the bus guys are really pushy with the tips when they handle the luggages.

Not the best Bahia Principe
We stayed at this resort from December 12th to December 19th 2024. We were 4 adults in the same family. We had three rooms. It rained in two of them. The hotel solution, you can change room. My door lock was loose and I had some difficulty opening my door, nobody fixed it. The food is good but the same every day. The internet is not fast and almost none existent around the complex. It is really on and off all the time. When you complained about something, the response are: change room or we are working on it. This resort is getting old. I will not return to this resort.

BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE
I came with my husband and 2 sons in a group of 14 ppl, we all were given 7 standard rooms in buildings 22 and 23 (first and second floors). Problems started right away in every room for our members : sink broken, electricity stops in the night, door is not opening/ clothing, etc. Imaging yourself jumping every hour or so at night to put the card into receiver because electricity shuts off and it is too hot in the room! I didn't sleep several night because of it. Of course, they sent technician, but problem resolved only for 2 days... Rooms are very dated, mold in the bathroom. For one lady in our group they didn't change the bed sheets between the previous guests and her when she entered. Hotel staff offers upgraded/ bigger rooms for additional pay, but it is not fair since we already paid a lot for our stay. My son got a food poisoning/ virus with fever for 2 days. Many other resort guests, I've heard, had nausea and vomiting, including a couple in our group. Very slow room service, 3 hours waiting for a bottle of water! When the strong rain passed, a guest on a first floor had a flood, and one of our groups' family as well (2 times) ; at the same time toilets on second floors stopped flushing. Also grounds were flooded as well. Stray cats and pregnant cats everywhere...Tons of mosquitoes in the resort... After 2 days we already wanted to leave! Our family has been to many resorts in Cuba, Mexico, other parts of Dominican Republic, and never encountered anything like this! Even 3 stars hotels in Cuba are better than "5 stars" Grand Bahia El Portillo! If you can, please choose a different hotel. Or visit this one if you want constant room problems and health issues... Very sad because the resort has potential and may become a paradise on earth. Instead, it provides people with vacation from hell! However the ocean/ beach is nice, grounds are beautiful and well kept, animation entertaining, and food was ok for me with a good variety, I will NEVER RETURN. Too many issues.
