From paradise to you're just a number in 5 years.
My 13th visit, 17 weeks, 2 weddings and 2 anniversaries in this hotel. Once it was my favourite hotel in the Mayan Riviera. The facilities and the grounds are still first class. The staff, the best I have every had. But they are run ragged. Not enough staff, the quality of the food is not much better than Cuba, there seems to be an atmosphere of resignation amongst the staff and the management dows t give a toss. We brought 43 guests for my daughter's wedding between 1st and 15th April. Wedding went off without a hitch. On Sunday, 3 days before.our departure I checked our return to the airport. I had booked 4 rooms for immediate family on the same booking, 9 adults and 3 children. It cost almost $30,000 with flights. One group of 4 did not have an airport transfer, despite being picked up to the hotel. Transfers should be free for direct bookings for Silver, Gold and Black members. They first told us only Black level Members get transfers, even if others are booked with them. Then they said that everyone had to travel on the same bus, even if flight times were different. This has never happened before. Each time I tried to find out what was happening, I had to tell the whole story over again and was handed to a different manager. None ever got back to me so I spent the last 3 days trying to find out what was happening. In the end, we had to pay $150 for a private transfer. It used to be the best, no longer I am afraid.

Just OK
Have just returned from an eight night stay, 5th to 13th April, at Bahia Principe Tulum after having stayed at Coba an Akumal on six previous occasions. In summary, I have noticed a steady decline in the overall quality during my visits. Visually all resorts are immaculate and perfect. It is only once I started to use the offerings available that basic flaws emerge. The room The safe failed three times The wall socket was hanging away from the wall next to the bed The A/C thermostat stayed on 17 degrees C or nothing The toilet released odors into the room. Requests for service initiated the spraying of bleach into all drain pipes. This resolved the issue for one day The lack of directory information in the room was a cause of frustration Other than the above items the room was always clean Food There was a good selection and varied of average quality. The more popular dishes ran out frequently and the staff failed to monitor and replenish The beef was always tough with the exception of pot roasted cuts The a la carte restaurants are not worth the time. The Brazilian restaurant tried to pass off sirloin tip as filet mignon. NO Previously one could eat at all buffets, now Akumal is excluded Drinks Beer was good but only draft, no selection or choice Spirits super sweet and weak Beach In the hands of mother nature. The hotel tied in vain in their battle against sargassum Star rating They claim 5 star but in my fairly extensive experience it is more an upper 3 to low 4

Girls trip
Beautiful resort with friendly staff and services. All inclusive offerings were enjoyable. Pool and beach area had plenty of loungers available. Good entertainment options. Shuttle service at resort is awesome to use to get from lobby to your building, to La Hacienda, or to Coba. It's a HOT climate with wonderful breeze from Caribbean Sea. Spa service though not included in all inclusive was outstanding. The Mayan experience massage was great! Guests services and front desk very helpful. The Tequila restaurant is the best!!

Great Hotel Poor beach!
Love the property! it's well maintained and beautiful grounds. Pool closing hours should be longer then 6PM. If you want a beach vacation, then this is not the place. Too many rocks and mountain of seaweed. I was looking for a relaxing snorkeling dive, but I couldn't even get my feet in the water. I hear there is a sectioned off to subdue the harsh waves for folks to swim but found to be a myth as I couldn't find it. Buffet restaurant was great...the Alacarte not so much. We tired the Thali Indian restaurant (too much spice and salty to taste anything else). Mikado was ok...food is good show was just alright. Nightly entertainment shows could use some work. Overall, the place was great but the having no beach broke the deal as that's my highlight of my vacation. So, I may not return for that reason.

Good time, huge resort
the place is huge. We did a lot of walking as we were in building 40 and it was a good walk to get to anything other then the small pool behind our building. The resort does offer trollies, but you have to wait sometimes for one to come along. The buffet was what my wife would say "slightly above average". There was lots to choose from and most of was ok. We did 2 specialty restaurants. The Brazilian and the Mexican. Both were very good and we would recommend them. They were always lots of places to get burgers or snacks and the wait was never too bad for that and for the most part they were tasty. Drinks were always good, not too long of a wait most times at the bars. They also have self serve pop, slushy, coffee and beer throughout. So that makes it a little easier if you just want any of those. Rooms are nice, but no privacy as the bathroom and shower are part of the room. The shower has frosted glass, but there is still no privacy. The toilet has it's own room with a see through mirror door. We were not a huge fan of that as you could still see through it when someone was in there. The pools are all great and there was always something going on at the main pool. The entertainment team were great. The beach..........well it was red flagged every day for our stay so I cannot say too much about it. the waves were rough and it was windy. there were a couple nice places to go in, but for the most part we could not enjoy it the wat we wanted to, this is not the hotels fault. As for the staff, we had no issues with anyone. They were all friendly and answered any questions we had. Our room was always cleaned in a timely matter and when we did use the trollies the drivers was always happy to assist. While we would not go back, only because we have been to this area twice now, I would recommend Bahia in Mexico. If I we were to do it again though I think we would book Akumal as I have heard the ocean is much calmer there as they are more in a bay or cove type area and the resort does nto seem to be quite as big.
