Decent hotel with great views but some service issues

This was our first time to Santo Domingo and I specifically booked Hotel Catalonia in order to get the perks and earn points for iPrefer loyalty status. We arranged an arrival airport transfer with the hotel which was pretty easy. Check in was a bit laborious but we did get upgraded from a premium ocean view room to a corner premium panoramic view. The room was quite spacious and definitely had a stunning panoramic view. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Even though the mini fridge was stocked with items we were able to get purchased bottles of wine to chill as well. The bathroom looked nice but wasn’t overly functional- the open rainfall shower led to a very wet slippery floor and there was no ventilation. That said the toilet was the quietest I have ever encountered which was great as we did wake each other up during mid sleep bathroom trips. It was also very difficult to keep the room cool, especially in the morning. As for the amenities, we used the gym and pool each day. The former was way too warm and the latter way too chilly (pool water that is, though very refreshing if you’re in the hot sun), There are two ellipticals which were semi-functional- don’t think they receive regular maintenance because you couldn’t use the programming buttons to choose the exercise or enter your weight. View was great but with the sun shining in, was warm, though strangely enough on our last morning it was much more palatable temperature wise. Not sure if someone else complained- I actually didn’t because it’s been my experience that a lot of Caribbean hotels just have warm fitness rooms. One thing that could be improved upon is the service. We arrived in the evening (7:30?) and wanted to get dinner at the lobby bar before settling in our room to watch the Thanksgiving night football game. The food took so long that we ended up having to take it up to the room in order to catch kickoff at 9:20 pm. I also had to inquire about my welcome amenity and food and beverage voucher- did get the former but no response on the latter. We had an issue with lack of/late housekeeping. But the next day when we requested housekeeping while we were out for lunch, it was granted. We also had a strange security incident involving the bellhop upon returning from dinner. Someone in the carport was trying to engage us and the bellhop tried to stop us from getting into the elevator and told us to go back outside. We kept moving at my husband’s insistence, so nothing happened. However when we mentioned it to the general manager and indicated that the security cameras should how what transpired, there was no follow-up. So, just be vigilant and aware of sketchy situations. Knowing what I now know about the hotel, I would return, keeping my expectations in check.

Jennifer in the Lobby bar was great .

Nice Hotel, great staff. The rooms are quite large and clean. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Jennifer in the lobby bar was excellent, always very helpful and polite. The meals are good too. There is a good gym, but some equipment needs repairing.

Comfortable hotel- good value for the price!

I travel to the Dominican Republic often but this was my first time staying in Santo Domingo in about 30 years. My best girlfriend and I traveled here for a women's conference/ mission trip. This hotel is a good deal- it's located in a nice area, a $5-$10 US uber away from the nightlife and trendy restaurant, etc. The rooms are modern and clean. Beautiful and unobstructed views of the ocean is what you will wake up to every day. They have a nice conference space. The restaurants on site and room service offer pretty tasty food and drinks. Victor in the cafe and bar in the lobby is a delight. Very attentive and professorial. The only issue we had was that the air conditioning was not that cold the first 2 days It was very hot and humid in the DR and I think the volume of people at the conference and then in every room in the hotel overloaded the system. Other than this we were comfortable.
