Amazing vacation at an awesome hotel

This was our first time in Bayahíbe.The deluxe suite at the Dreams Dominicus La Romana was very comfortable. The staff was kind and efficient. The food at the restaurants and buffet was delicious. The shows at night were amazing. The entertainment team was fun. The activities were varied. All in all we had a great time. Can't wait to come back next year

Pretty Relaxing Two Weeks at Dreams Dominicus La Romana

Came from Toronto - Stayed from Oct. 5-19/2024. We had reserved a Preferred Club Pool view 2 bedroom family suite for my husband and I, my daughter & our 18 month old grandson. When we arrived we were quickly taken to the Preferred club check in, given a pretty drink, assigned a guy who took us to the lobby, give us a coupon for the spa and tried his hardest to get us to go see another resort (which we refused - may have been timeshare?) Throughout our trip everyone was constantly being asked to book the spa by salesmen. It got a bit tedious. We were advised at check in that the room/building we reserved was being renovated, so we had to be in 2 temporary connected rooms closer to the beach/action until it's completion. We were disappointed and should have been warned by Sunwing or Hyatt before we arrived! The baby, plus bags & a stroller to carry up & down a flight of stairs in that heat to our temporary room, for 3 days was difficult. Thank God our daughter had us - she would not have been able to do that alone! Temporary room was Bldg 62-Room 203 & 204 which was right by the main square where loud entertainment shows were on at 9:30 pm while our grandson tried to sleep. Very inconvenient. Room had a jungle view so ‘NO’ view! Finally they did re-open the building we reserved after 3 nights. Accommodations - When we did move to our proper Preferred rooms (Building 49-Room 110 & 111) they were spacious, quieter & had 2 balconies (one was huge), with great pool views. Had great A/C and ceiling fans. Rooms were clean but IT IS TIME for some room renovations, as it is getting dated! Showers had great water pressure & temperature + all the bathing amenities. Room had a steamer, a safe, 2 pairs of slippers, complimentary beach bag, small M&M’s, Pringles, robes, coffee maker, etc. & the standard fare. Insect Side note - There were some teeny tiny no-see-um bugs around the coffee makers and under the TV’s (maybe they like the water or the heat?), but we used Lysol wipes & that seemed to take care of them well enough. In 14 days we saw exactly 2 cockroaches. 1 on our 12th day in the main buffet and 1 on our last day in our living room. It’s a tropical resort issue that I feel they keep very well under control, but I had to be honest and mention it. Service - The staff could not help the initial room issues, & were as kind and helpful as they could be. They were friendly and all said “Ola” everywhere we went. We tip for every meal and every drink, so our service might have been a bit better than most, but we watched 98 percent of people not tip (it’s not mandatory), and we observed the staff were still very friendly & courteous to everyone! Special thanks to Junior, Israel and several waiters, hostesses & bartenders whose names I didn’t write down…They were all excellent! Everywhere on this resort they are GREAT with little kids! Our grandson was too young for it, but the 'Kids Club' children looked like they were having amazing adventures all around the resort. Weekends were more crowded at the pools ,restaurants, beaches - it seemed like they may have had locals brought in to use the resort. We witnessed several weddings, family reunions, and group trips where people were having the time of their lives. The staff all tried to speak English for our benefit. Preferred Club provided us with our Butler Luis, with whom we shared our WhatsApp number and he really was available to be “messaged anytime”! He also messaged us regularly to see if we needed any assistance. He arranged for extra stuff in the room for the baby, booked our Le Petit Chef dinner, advised on which restaurants were open/closed & arranged for two of us to have birthday decorations, champagne, fruits, etc. We really found the Butler service to be quite valuable. Food - Great 24 hour coffee shop CoCo Cafe…hot , cold and frozen coffee drinks, as well as desserts, fruits & sandwiches. Main buffet & all restaurants were a solid 7/10. Not great but not horrible. Fruits/Veggies were fresh & well prepared. Chicken - made a ton of different ways was all good. World Cafe & Flying Fish had lots of variety & nicely presented food. Tons of cheeses, breads, cold meats, freshly prepared pastas, omelettes, great bacon, just a very good variety of food! Room service took anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, & the food was average (though the fruit plate was very good). At all the Restaurants (Japanese, Italian, etc.) - We had no issues with the portion sizes. The desserts were really pretty & very tasty. The restaurants took turns being closed (maybe due to off season?) so we had to ask the butler every day what was open. Wifi and TV - Wifi was awesome everywhere on this resort (we’ve been to places where it cuts out often - this was very steady and reliable), but the TV reception went frozen and/or went ‘no signal’ often…At least 30% of the time it was frozen…maybe they need a better satellite? Spanish channels could be changed to English on their smart TV's which was quite a nice touch. Grounds- VERY well kept, always someone working on the garden, etc. Kept very clean & really beautiful. Preferred building has it’s own bar open all day, great adult pool with strong jets & a great kids pool/splash pad. I has it's own air conditioned lobby, an air conditioned lounge with snacks, water, seats, & a TV. Call for a golf cart (or order it from the lobby people) & 5 minutes later they will whisk you from the Preferred building under the road, through the tunnel to the Main Buffet or the lobby or the beach or a pool…wherever. Great service when you are hot and sweaty. We always gave them a couple of bucks. They were also very friendly and funny guys. Beach - GORGEOUS, white sand, no seaweed, crystal clear water, shallow going out a long way…absolute perfection for frolicking in the ocean…waves were perfect. Calm yet refreshing. Beach is not that big, but I can’t say enough about the beauty of it. Right beside us was the Catalonia, which looked really nice as well. Shopping -At the lobby gift shop we bought chocolate bars, Gatorade, candy, etc. All very expensive - needed batteries for the baby’s stroller fan - 2 AA batteries were $10 U.S.! A shot glass was $8 U.S. - average for a gift shop I guess. (Gift shop was one of the very few places to keep nice and cool - A/C was great.) Pools - Well kept, but could be skimmed a bit more often. Pools are all quite beautiful with all walkways around the pools kept clear of any debris. Plenty of sun shades, beach chairs, & drink servers. Great music at the main pool, and wonderful Entertainment team had great workouts, dancing, etc. for the guests. Entertainment - We watched the fire show at the pool, which was awesome. Did not catch the rest (have seen too many resort shows over the years), but they were standard resort shows, done with much enthusiasm from the entertainment team. Lots of energy and tons of fun for visitors! Overall had a great time at Dreams Dominicus! TIP - In the Preferred Club beach area, get lounge chairs at the very back. You have ocean access, you are right near the outdoor shower & adjacent to the main pool, where the music is (and where there's a good breeze from the ocean). You are also close to the main buffet, the Preferred Club Beach restaurant and the Main Beach restaurant. We went back and forth from these loungers to the ocean, the restaurants and the pool on the days we didn't hang out at the Main Preferred Club building with the kid's Splash pad.

    Go here for the beach!

Honest review ahead… We chose this resort because of the great reviews of the beach at La Romana, which did not disappoint. We have visited many resorts in the Caribbean and more recently spent lots of time in Mexico but have been disappointed by the beaches. The beach at La Romana is stunning, beautiful white sand, calm, clear blue sea, and NO SEAWEED. This is the biggest selling point of the whole resort. We have stayed at both Secrets and Dreams resorts in Mexico so knew what to expect from the resort. Check in was no issue - we came from the UK and were the only people from our transfer staying here. One thing to note is that if you are in a shared transfer from Punta Cana with TUI (and likely other providers) this property is the LAST drop off in La Romana. We were also the 1st pick up on the return. Book a private transfer as this added at least an hour each way onto the journey. We were given an “upgraded” room in the Privilege Building - this is the family building at the back of the resort, furthest away from the beach, main restaurants and pools. We accepted the room as we were told it was an upgrade, but without the Privilege upgrades/add ons. So not really an upgrade was it?! It was also furthest away from where we would’ve liked to have been located…which we didn’t clock onto until the following day when we got our bearings. Hotel shouldn’t tell guests “you’ve been upgraded” when you haven’t. We are fit and healthy so walking 10 mins to the pools and beach wasn’t an issue but just fair warning to avoid the family building if you don’t want to do the walk. There are golf cart transfers but we rarely saw them and it wasn’t worth waiting around for them. Room itself was spacious, nice decor with big balcony, comfy beds, big TV with lots of variety on the channels and good air con. Fridge stocked with a few beers, soft drinks and water which was a plus. We spent most of our time between the main (infinity) pool where there was a good vibe, good pool bar and the beach. Beds always available. We didn’t have an issue finding umbrellas/shade either, and the hotel was quite busy. Restaurants and food was so-so. First time in DR and we’d heard the food offerings weren’t great - which is true compared to other Caribbean Dreams/Secrets resorts. Don’t expect fine/gourmet dining. Breakfast buffet was a bit hit and miss. Omelette station was always good. We always tip but drink service at the buffet wasn’t great. You’d wait ages for coffee. Get your own soft drinks rather than wait for staff to bring them otherwise you’ll be waiting for ages. Same for the evening restaurants - service nowhere near Mexico standards. We never had to wait more than about 30 mins for a table but would often get forgotten about once seated, and often parts of our order were missed. Once you get used to that notion though, the dining experience was fine. We enjoyed all the drinks, especially the DR rum! Just ask for the top shelf liquors by name. I don’t like highlighting negatives - the food, service and room were small niggles that we got over quickly, we were on vacation after all. However one thing I do need to warn other guests about is that my husband mistakenly left his wallet in his backpack in the room (note NOT in the safe, but NOT on show either) on the first full day we were in resort. By that evening, I had an alert on my phone from my online banking app that someone had tried to use our Visa card on TEMU to the tune of $300!! This was NOT us. My bank blocked the charge as a) we had never shipped on TEMU before and b) the IP address was in DR which flagged as suspicious activity. As soon as we saw the alert, we searched our bags and my husband saw someone had gone through his wallet. The cards were put back in the wrong places. As we had not used the cards at all since we had left the UK, it had to be someone who entered our room, searched the backpack and found the wallet. The card was not taken, but obviously a photo or note of the card details was made and a transaction was attempted later that evening. Our room would have only been attended by the cleaner (1st service of the stay) and the mini bar attendant. Obviously this was incredibly alarming - you do not expect to have an attempted theft from your room in a resort of this standard. We went straight to Front Desk to report it. As it was at night, no management on duty (supposedly) and the following day, it took quite a few visits to concierge desk to get this resolved. As you can expect, we were promised action with the staff in question and a follow up, but nothing was done. We were offered 2 x massages as an apology - which just about evened out the call charges I made to my bank to block my card. This event did leave a horrible taste in our mouths but we didn’t let it ruin the rest of our trip. Just letting other potential guests know not to let their guard down and use the safe or hide your valuables in your case. We would return to La Romana because of the beach but unlikely to this hotel unless there was a great offer available.

    Friendly, and gorgeous

A great resort on the smaller side, with all the amenitirs of a bigger one. Beautiful beach and infinity pool with a swim-up bar. If you're looking for more of a quieter poolside fay the relax pool is perfect. The resort staff are very kind, especially our maid Yaneri. She made our stay all the better with what can only be described as her mother's love. The resort is LGBT friendly.

Friendly staff, great food overall, excellent beach, good bedroom, etc.

We went to this resort in the latter half of September 2024 for a week. When we arrived, we were welcomed with a nice and refreshing welcome drink. We did not have to wait long, maybe a few minutes, before we were in the process of checking in. The staff member was very pleasant, friendly, and enthusiast. My wife and I booked a Deluxe King Bed room. My brother-in-law had a Double bed room. Although the reception area did not have air condition, due to its open layout, it wasn’t too hot. On the other side of the reception area was a small shop and restrooms. Right off of this area was the main lobby bar and sitting area. At night, there was usually live music there with one person playing some instrument. This resort is a small resort and narrow compared to others. Looking at the buildings and the roofs, you can tell that it needed taking care of. Anyways, our room was on the 2nd floor outside the one of the 3 pools. Due to how the room was designed, the window did not look to the pool area but at another building. The room itself was clean. We had a vaulted ceiling. The mini-fridge included many beers, soft drinks, juices, and water. There was also a coffee machine with coffees and teas. We did not have a closet, but a small dresser to hang clothes and where the safe was. This dresser did not close properly. The first night sleeping, all of a sudden, one of the doors opened by itself. There were enough outlets in the room and one on each side of the bed. There was a small round table and two cushioned chairs. We also had a walkout balcony with a small round table and two chairs. Provided in the dresser were 2 robes and 2 pairs of slippers (with Dreams branding). There was also extra blanket/pillow in there and a steam iron. The bathroom only had 1 sink and a standup shower. The toilet area was inside the bathroom but separate as it had its own door. The bathroom did not have a fan though so it got very misty in there when taking a shower. Soaps, shampoo, and all the typical toiletries were provided. Overall, I found the room small but okay. The room that my brother-in-law had was much better and was cheaper. His was almost 2 times as big, had a nice balcony looking at some greenery. He had a very large closet as well. We were disappointed about the room we got after seeing his. As this is relatively small resort, the buffet was smaller than we’re accustomed to. The food was still good though but not as much variety as others. For breakfast, they have 2 omelet stations and a pancake one. Eggs were available every day, bacon not so much. They had sausages instead. They had the typical breads, cheeses, yogurts, etc. They had freshly made juices every morning. For lunch and dinner, they had pork, beef, and fish in the grilling stations. They had pizzas and pastas. One of the most important things I want on these types of vacations are the fruits. Overall, they did not disappoint. They had lots of watermelons, guavas, pineapple, melons, etc. What I really wanted was mangoes. They had lots at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They even had lots of dragonfruit, the red and white varieties. Although I said it was small, I did not go hungry from the buffets. The a-la-carte restaurants were good. Some were excellent. The salmon at on them was very good. My brother-in-law who is very picky said that it was the best he’s ever had. For the a-la-cartes, no reservation is required and you can go as many times. We usually went early as soon as they opened and we always got it. There weren’t really any lineups at that time. The French restaurant was not opened every day. You should check and find out. If you reply on the app, it’s not very accurate. Even the menus on the app may not be the menus in each restaurant. We went expecting to have things we’ve seen on the app, but it’s not in the restaurant menu. Overall, we were happy with these a-la-carte restaurants especially when you could order more than one main or dessert or appetizer if you wanted to. They did not hesitate to provide if we asked. We’re not heavy drinkers but they had whatever drink we wanted, except for coconut water. We were told by one of the very friendly bartenders that they usually have something on Fridays at lunch time by the main pool and they did. We got our coconut water. Usually the bars open at 10am, but they were so nice that they actually served us earlier even if it was an hour earlier. There is also a coffee shop called Coco Café which is open 24 hours. The staff there was friendly too. We went there multiple times every day. We did not spend too much time in the pools but they were clean. We spent a lot of time in the ocean and the water was great. The sand at the beach didn’t really have any rocks and in the water as well. Although there were waves, it wasn’t really rough ones. Most importantly, there wasn’t any sargassum seaweed. There were daily fitness activities at the beach and pool. Overall, this was a great resort. The main standouts were the staff. The member who checked us in remembered us when we checked out. The 2 bartender we talked to were top notch, especially the one who informed us about the coconut water. The staff at the buffet and a-la-cartes were excellent. I don’t remember all the names at the bars/restaurants, but Benjamin, Daily, and Ana were great. My wife really enjoyed this resort and can’t stop praising it to this day. What I also liked was that there was no wristband and you do not need towel cards to get towels. So no worrying if someone takes your towels. For me, what I did not like is mainly the room and how small as mentioned above compared to the room my brother-in-law got, and the old dresser in the room instead of a closet. That’s the only significant con that I could think of. I would recommend this resort to anyone and I have done so. I would give 4.5 stars, but it won't let me and I feel 4 stars is a disservice, so I will give 5 especially since my wife thinks it is 5 stars.
