Nov 21, 2024Mixed feelings: beautiful setting, but disappointing service experience
We stayed at Dreams Onyx for seven nights in November to celebrate our anniversary and to explore it as a potential destination wedding venue. We booked a Preferred Club room with a private pool, hoping for a luxurious and memorable experience. While there were some highlights, including the beautiful grounds and excellent room, the service—especially from our butler—left us feeling disappointed. Here’s a breakdown of our experience: 1. Room and Amenities: 5/5 The room was fantastic—spacious, clean, and well-maintained. The private pool added a wonderful touch of luxury and gave us a peaceful retreat. Its location was ideal, close to amenities but still quiet and private. The housekeeping and minibar staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring our room was spotless and well-stocked throughout our stay. The room was the highlight of our trip and helped make the stay enjoyable despite the service challenges. 2. Grounds and Facilities: 5/5 The resort is stunning. The landscaping is immaculate, and the beach is clean and well-maintained, perfect for relaxing or watching sunrises and sunsets. The adults-only Preferred Pool was an excellent retreat, offering a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. In general, the pool game was strong with a great water park. Definitely fun for families! The physical beauty of the resort is one of its strongest features and deserves praise. 3. Food and Drinks: 3/5 The variety of food options was impressive, and there was something for everyone. However, the quality was hit or miss. While some dishes were enjoyable, most were just average and far from the premium standard expected at a resort of this level. Nothing stood out as exceptional. Drinks, on the other hand, were consistently good, with the bar staff creating personalized and creative cocktails that we thoroughly enjoyed. 4. Service (General): 3/5 Service across the resort was inconsistent. Some staff members, like Nelis and Ismael, were fantastic and made a great impression. However, overall, the level of service didn’t meet the expectations of a Preferred Club experience. Often being greeted at restaurants with a vibe they did not want to be there. While we did appreciate the efforts of certain team members, there was a lack of consistency, which left us feeling overlooked at times. 5. Butler Service: 1/5 The butler service was the most disappointing aspect of our stay. Our butler, Rafael, consistently delivered the bare minimum and made no effort to create a personalized experience for us. He also never tried to engage with us or get to know us at all. Despite multiple reminders that we were celebrating our anniversary, there were no thoughtful gestures. After prompting and explicitly asking for something we knew others had received - we received a generic “Happy Birthday” banner on our door (incorrect), a cupcake with a birthday topper (again, wrong occasion), and strawberries delivered 20 minutes before we left. These gestures felt impersonal and rushed, especially compared to the thoughtful celebrations we saw provided to other guests. We genuinely felt we were bothering him with our presence. This lack of attention to detail and effort was not just disappointing for our anniversary but also made us rethink the resort as a potential wedding venue. Had Rafael taken the time to engage with us or provide a memorable service, we would have been open to considering Dreams Onyx for a destination wedding. Instead, his indifference left us questioning whether this resort could provide the kind of care and attention needed for such an important event. 6. Check-In/Check-Out Experience: 2/5 Our experience started on the wrong foot with an impersonal and rushed check-in process. There was no welcome drink, no acknowledgment of our anniversary, and no effort to make us feel special. At check-out, we expressed our dissatisfaction during our stay, but were met with indifference. This lack of engagement from the Preferred Club team made the beginning and end of our stay feel underwhelming. Overall Rating: 3/5 Dreams Onyx has undeniable strengths: beautiful grounds, great pools, fantastic rooms, and a few standout staff members. However, the inconsistent service—particularly the disappointing butler experience—overshadowed the positives. For a resort that markets itself as a luxury destination, more attention to detail and guest care is needed to match the high expectations. We would recommend Dreams Onyx to those seeking a beautiful setting and decent amenities, but it’s not ideal for celebrating special occasions or for those expecting a high level of personalized service. Unfortunately, we left feeling that our anniversary was not truly celebrated, and this experience has ruled out the resort as a potential wedding venue.

We had an incredible stay at Dreams Onyx Resort! The clean and well-maintained beaches provided the perfect setting for relaxation. The variety of restaurants exceeded our expectations, offering delicious meals and great ambiance. A special thanks to Yuriy at the front desk, who went above and beyond to help accommodate our large group near each other. Highly recommend this resort for anyone looking for a fantastic vacation experience!

Overall our experience was great. Very friendly staff and resort well maintained. Fitness Center was well maintained and the equipment was kept in running order. The rooms were very spacious and bright. The water activities were great and many to choose from through out the resort.

Great Family Experience at Dreams Onyx!
Awesome family resort. More things for kids to do than we even realized when we booked! We travelled with 3 adults and 3 kids (12, 11 and 8) and they were entertained the entire time! We walked the beach each day and our beach was by far the best kept beach among the resorts we walked past! The daily pool parties with games and music were a HIT with our kids, never an issue getting a lounger on the beach or pool area. The lazy river and waterslides were great too. Almost all staff can speak key words of English (most can speak much more than that) so communication is not an issue for English speaking travelers! Food was good - huge variety at the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinners, menus at restaurants were small but seemed okay for just visiting them once or twice. Nightly shows could have been of better quality but were still good. They set up for 3 different weddings while we were here, always in a different area of the resort. They appeared to have done a beautiful job with set up! All things considered, we would definitely recommend that you book this for a family trip!

This place is so amazing I cannot wait to go back. The only thing is that the food needs an upgrade the good food is limited but the view and experience is breathtaking. I would definitely go back again. Mercure was a good excellent restaurant.
