I’ve stayed here before. Beautiful views from the rooms and the grounds are lovely. The rooms are a bit worn and need updating. Ours had a big wooden door (that kept sliding off its track) which covers the bathroom entrance. Not much privacy as it hangs there with gaps around the edges. Also disappointed that they now force you to use the valet for $35/day instead of using the guest parking lot across the street which they now call valet parking overflow. Despite this, other guests told me they parked there regardless of the rules. I would have disregarded these issues and not posted a review but for an issue I encountered. As a Diamond member, I am entitled to a 4 PM checkout when available. Using the AARP rate, one is entitled to a 2 PM checkout when available. I requested a 1 PM checkout and was told anything after noon would require a $75 fee. I read the front desk the rules and her response was basically upon availability and late checkout is not available unless you pay $75. I don’t think this is how the rule is supposed to be applied and certainly I have never encountered this kind of response in 20+ years as a Hilton customer. Available is available and unavailable is unavailable. Not a fee to make unavailable suddenly available.

Time Machine
Can’t decide to give 3 or 2 stars. Wow. So dated. I literally feel like I’m on an episode of the Flintstones where they’ve gone to Rock Vegas. The building is prime 60s construction. Valet parking only for $25 day. And the room……it looks like the Grinch stole Christmas in here. A wrinkled letter, no doubt read by the last 50 guests in this room, sits on the bureau stating that they are updating the artwork. There are literal holes in the walls where the pictures were taken away. The view looks onto the bay but also you can see the other 60s era high rises and the container shipping yard. There was a hair in the shower, ewwwwwww. Towels look clean, they gave free drink coupons. Lots of families and kids running around.

Would stay in a wheelchair-accessible room with bathtub with ocean view again
The wheelchair-accessible room with a queen bed and bathtub (and ocean view) worked great for us. I was surprised that the front desk person said that there is no room like that with a king bed, when it clearly says that is what I reserved. That said, I was pleased to have a room that met my access needs that had such a lovely view and air conditioning. The room was pretty small, but the view and lanai made up for it. This is a great location in terms of Hilo and as a starting point to explore the island. The food and service in the restaurant were very good the one time we ate there. There's an overpriced gift shop with a large selection of just about anything you could want. There were some things about the room/hotel that weren't ideal. 1) The bathroom door was misaligned and would not close. 2) When we were in the restaurant for breakfast, someone was powerwashing the sidewalk the entire time (and for hours after we were done eating breakfast). The noise definitely detracted from the ambiance. 3) There was no artwork on the walls of the hotel room. There was a note apologizing for this. 4) It was confusing where we were allowed to park. This seemed like it might be intentional because the hotel wants guests to pay for valet parking. I would stay here again.

Hotel doesn’t know how to handle an emergency
This hotel sucks. Someone pulled a fire alarm at 5 AM and the hotel had to evacuate. Not the hotels fault, but everything after was. The PA system was super quiet and you couldn’t hear anything from the parking lot during the evacuation. Once and all clear was given, no one was able to actually shut off the alarms. No maintenance on duty. Fire department never showed up as best I can tell. Labels to escape were pretty bad. Then there’s the actual experience of the hotel. Desperate need of a renovation. There’s bathroom doors don’t shut completely and leave a large gap. On top of that, there’s a windows peering into the bathroom straight at the toilet so the family can watch you do your business. On top of all that is the cost. Resort prices for a basic hotel in an area that has no business charging resort rates. My only regret of this vacation was staying here. If it’s not too late, change your booking. I read and ignored my gut instinct with these reviews. I wish I hadn’t.

Liked some parts, but didn't like other parts
I would give it maybe a 3.5. Part of the problem is that I am not a resort-type person. I like simplicity. I stayed here because of an event and I thought the prices were reasonable. Some of the things I liked were: Great location with beautiful banyan trees and a couple of nice parks nearby. Beautiful views. I would say at least 2/3 of the rooms had ocean views. One section had golf-course views, but there was construction going on near those at the time I went. Easy ocean or pool swimming access. Decent gym with more equipment than I usually see at other Doubltrees. All-inclusive resort. You pretty much don't have to leave. They have a convenience store, kayak rentals, tours, and two restaurants. Live entertainment, including hula dancing (though I didn't particularly care for it) Cute birds. A kolea was my companion while I worked out or swam. I saw Nene flying by. Lots of saffron finches and some yellow-billed cardinals. Things I didn't like were: 100% valet parking. Valet parking is nice, but do you really have to force everyone to use it? It also costs extra. Luckily, there was enough parking on the street. Noisy. The walls were very thin here. Also, I could hear a lot of the noise from the lobby area even though I was on the 6th floor. There was also a very loud concert going on at the golf course that you can hear from miles away. Air conditioning does have a "fan option" where you can have the fan running continuously with the A/C turned off. So, it cycles on and off and is very loud, especially as I was trying to sleep. They're doing renovations, so the rooms are very dated and lack artwork. The whole building needs painting. However, that didn't bother me as much as it would for other people. I probably wouldn't have made this hotel my first choice, but it's not a bad choice if you have an event in the area or you like being on the ocean.
