Sadly Disappointed Parents and Child
My husband and I decided to treat ourselves and our daughter to four nights in Kona followed by four nights at the Grand Wailea in Maui. We paid over $1,200 per night the week before Christmas to stay at the Grand Wailea. We had heard such magical things, and decided to splurge on this vacation. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us. No lei. No shell necklace. Nothing. Instead, we waited in line for 30 minutes to check in at a severely understaffed front-desk. You could tell they wanted to help and they were nice, but they seemed so totally overwhelmed. After we checked in, we quickly started to notice a few things. You could tell that this place was truly magical at one point in time. The grounds and view are gorgeous. The pool/waterslides/etc. are great for kids. However, there is deferred maintenance abound. Rusted toilet stalls, dirty walls, elevators that bounced up and down, etc. And the staff seems genuinely nice and kind and like they want to help, but aren't always able to. My husband went down to the pool to relax for a bit while I unpacked. He tried to get a towel. He waited 15 minutes in line for towels, only to be told he needed to get a wristband first. "How do I do that?" Go wait in another line. 30 minutes passed. He got out of line, defeated. In the meantime, I was wiping out sand from the drawers and wiping down areas in the bathroom that were not clean. When my husband returned to the room to tell me about his experience, I said "It can't be that bad... Let's go check out the beach!" We walked about ten minutes from the hotel room to the beach, and when we arrived, we were greeted with piles of dirty towels everywhere, trash all over the beach, and a father helping his toddler pee on the walk-way. We tried to sit on a lounge chair. "No, you can't sit there. You have to pay $150 to rent the lounge chairs!" Well, okay then. We will move. Maybe we can rent a cabana. "How much is a cabana?" "Oh my" responded a very kind but embarrassed employee, they are $1,500." Then we went to the luau. Our server was wonderful! The luau was okay, but nothing special. My husband left his fancy sunglasses that I had gotten him as a gift on the table when we left. We asked where they would be if anyone turned them in. We were told security. We called security, and were told no one turned in sunglasses from the luau the night before. We asked the concierge. Nothing. We called security again. Nothing. As a last ditch effort to find them, my husband walked down to the luau the next night, and the folks running the luau were super helpful! One employee overheard the conversation and said "oh yeah... we found them last night and turned them into security." We called security again. Again, we were told that they didn't have them. One of the employees from the luau (which is run by an outside company) was kind enough to walk my husband to the security office to get to the bottom of it. After again telling him they didn't have the sunglasses, and after this kind employee insisted that he colleague turned them in the night before, the sunglasses magically appeared. Best case scenario, security is negligent and doesn't know how to do their job. Worst case scenario, they wanted to keep the sunglasses for themselves. Trust lost. The first night, we were kept up all night by a screaming baby/toddler in the adjoining room. We know hotels can't control this, so we don't fault them for it, but the walls are definitely thinner than we would have liked. They offered to switch us to another room, told me to come to the front desk to get the key, and to let myself in and return the key if we didn't like the other room. After I did all that, they then said that the family next door was leaving that day, so we decided to stay put. The next day we went downstairs to the casual restaurant that is supposedly specially curated by Erewhon. Great... We love Erewhon! Super excited to try the fresh juices on the photos adorning the walls of the restaurant. One fresh orange juice please. "Oh, we don't have that." "POG juice please." "Nope." "Okay, what kind of juice do you have?" "Dole, made from concentrate with other natural flavors." "Really, but this is Hawaii, and this is a store curated by Erewhon." "Sorry ma'am... we don't have any fresh juice." "Let's try the water elevator!" Nope... its only open a few hours each day, and has a very long line. Pool opens late and closes early. Waterslides close early. Disappointed child. On the plus side, the waitstaff at the pool was very kind and attentive. We got the impression, however, that the hotel has some kind of policy that penalizes the employees (maybe the timing of the payments or amount of the tips?) if the guests order through the app/code on the chairs as opposed to with the wait staff directly. I can't confirm this, but that was the vibe we were getting, so we ordered through them. The food was very good and the service was excellent! After a long day at the pool, we returned to our room with our arms full of pool floats (we had to buy at the store by the pool), sunscreen, books, sunglasses, etc. Everyone was exhausted after a long day at the pool the long-ish walk back from the pool to the hotel room. And, of course, when we arrive, the key doesn't work. I text the concierge. No response. My husband goes downstairs while I wait with our daughter outside the room. He waits in line at the front desk for a while, but the line is so long and isn't moving because now it is check-in time again, and again, they are severely understaffed, so he gets out of line. He manages to find another employee who sends up security to our room. "Sorry ma'am, the battery to the key reader is dead. I have to send up engineering to change the battery." "Mommy, where are all the gingerbread houses?" "I don't see them, let me ask." "Excuse me, where are the gingerbread houses?" "They are normally right here, but we aren't doing them any more." You could see the disappointment in their faces. And now I sit on my balcony with the very strong smell of weed wafting through the air from another room. "Mommy.. what is that smell???" Oh great! And the list goes on and on. My husband and I work too much and were really looking forward to this vacation. We stepped outside our comfort zone to stay at what we thought was going to be a magical property. In the end we were sadly disappointed. Or maybe our expectations were too high as we spent the prior four nights at Mauna Lani (Auberge property) in Kona, which was truly magical! Either way, if you plan on staying here, please know what you are getting yourself into. We did not, and now we are trying to make the best of our remaining time here by spending as much time off-property as possible.

We loved this resort!
Spectacular. We went here for a reward trip for work and it was one of the best hotel stays. The rooms were exceptional, they were clean and they had really nice large bathrooms. The hotel has plenty of amenities, several pools, a swim up bar and a private beach. We found little reason to leave the ground. One night we had dinner in the lobby restaurant that is open air and it was really a nice atmosphere. This hotel also has several shopping options onsite which was nice. The pool area was quite crowded when we were there, so one day we rented a private cabana. That came with lots of snacks and it was a great option to have our own private area away from others. It was slightly expensive, but in the end with the added snacks and perks it ended up being worth it. One critique would be that once everything shuts down at night, if you need a snack or a drink your only option is room service. No grab and go option that stays open 24 hours. But if that is the WORST that can be said, you're good.

Not resort at all
Stay away from.. this hotel ( not resort) is going down the hill ..there was not any positive experience for my family at this hotel. Who changes $150 a day to sit at beach on beach resort property? We check out early and spend few nights at Four season next door and had amazing experience. Do not stay here. Go to Four Season and you will appreciate it.

Over priced while under construction
Parts of the resort are under construction, and the noise of saws and hammers was inescapable during the day. Pool chairs were very hard to come by, and the free beach chairs are gone very early most days. The Grotto pool bar is smack dab in the middle of the family activity pool area, which made it difficult to visit from the quieter adults-only pool. Only about half the resort paths are lit at night, the rest were left dark. Ponds that looked full of Koi in their photos and videos were sparsely populated. Maybe 1 or 2 lonely fish in each area. Our Luau was cancelled with no explanation. Overall, I felt we overpaid to stay in an unfinished hotel by the beach. On the plus side, the restaurants and lobby bar are very good and the room itself was great. When finished, this will be a nice resort but I would avoid until the construction is done.

Excellent stay! Relaxing, romantic, fun! Yes, expensive too.
Great rooms, super fun pool area, easy access to the beach, boardwalk, and shops, great restaurants. The whole package. The pools! They are truly wonderful for adults and children alike. We went as a couple and didn't even feel the need to only stay by the adult-only pool. The kids and families really weren't very disruptive. Everyone's there to just have a good time. There's a lot of fun things to do, with waterslides, rope swings into the pool, swim up bars, pool-side service, the beach, and included (with the resort fee) activities like yoga and ukulele classes. Humu (the restaurant) also had a really fun bar area where the bar itself is an aquarium, so you can watch the fishes swim around under your plate as you enjoy your meal. You don't need to reserve for the bar, so just make sure you get there early enough to snag a spot. The rooms felt very updated, clean, and comfortable. Bathrooms were large and bright. The lanai's had great views. We stayed in a Deluxe Ocean room. If you want to go to the nearby shops and restaurants outside of the resort, they even have a private shuttle service you can call upon with no extra charge. Super easy and comfortable!
