SAFETY CONCERNS
I originally booked this hotel through Hotels.com for a one-night stay. When I checked in, the male desk clerk asked if I was traveling alone. I refused to answer, and he kept pushing the issue. Instead of telling me my room number and handing me the key, he walked me to the room (even though I requested he not do that), and entered the room after me to "turn on the air conditioning." The balcony door did not close all the way and the entry door did not lock securely. I made the decision to find a different hotel as I did not feel safe staying at Hotel Castle Maria. When I checked out approximately 20 minutes after arriving, I was greeted by a different male clerk who became very pushy and rude when I told him I would like to check out of the hotel. He repeatedly asked me where I was going and what hotel I planned to stay at. When I got home from my trip, I filed a claim with Hotels.com who attempted to negotiate a refund on my behalf. The claims representative reported that the hotel manager would not issue a refund because I stayed several hours and left after midnight without checking out or filing a complaint. This is patently false and confirms the unsettling feeling I had during my very brief time at the property. Don't bother with this hotel. There are other options in Road Town. You can't put a price on safety--spend the extra money to stay somewhere reputable.

Good for a night or two
Clean, dated room adequate for a short stay, wouldn't want to make it a base for an extended vacation. Not sure what impact the hurricane has had although indications are that it's one of the few places that escaped major damage.

Hurrican Irma
I would like to point out the fact that we have tried out a couple of low budget accomodations in Road Town. Of all of them, this is by far the best. It's not very fancy, you probably wouldn't want it for your honeymoon, bit it's clean and best value for money. And it has hosts who care about their guests, and that is, on Tortola, not easy to find. We actualy owe Izac & Andrew quite a lot. We booked a room for the upcoming Storm. Nobody knew that Irma would hammer the BVI and that most houses (and lots of accomodations) would loos their roofs, their windows. Nobody thought that the Supermarkets, the Restaurants would be closed for days. Castle Maria kept its roof, its windows and after enduring the 6 hour storm there was a knock on the door and that there was food for everyone who was hungry. And this continued day after day. Whoever was hungry, was invited to eat. No questions asked. Isac & Andrew, thankyou. For realy caring about your guests.

Adequate
Clean, pleasant hotel within walking distance of the ferry. Not too much, not too little.A place to put your head for the night. The swimming pool is a nice touch, although I personally did not take a dip. There is also a serviceable bar with cold $4 beers.

Low low budget
I wouldn't recommend even if you're desperate. It's like an oversea's low budget youth hostel. The staff however is extremely nice and accommodating. The rate I booked was not honored, I was stuck so I had to pay it. Shady operation. Lots of bugs on the floor and in my bed. Noisy. But the staff is nice! :)
