Very Happy, Enjoyable Holiday
Our first stay at this Riu hotel. We know from previous experience that Riu's are generally busy but extremely well managed hotels, and this was no exception. The first point to note is how easy it is to travel from the airport to the hotel. We caught a service bus from just outside the arrivals hall to the nearest bus stop (Costa Mar) for 1.80 Euros each. For the return trip we booked a taxi at reception for 15 Euros. The second point is that the hotel is actually two hotels that have been joined together by a covered walkway. The south hotel is where most of the services are located, reception, bars, entertainment, dining etc. We were located in the north hotel, which is a 10-15 minute walk away. It's an easy pleasant enough walk, but bear in mind that this will involve at least 3 return trips each day for meals. If you are mobility impaired you need to take this into consideration. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Room cleaning and grounds maintenance were particularly good. The food was great, well prepared and plenty of variety. At peak times the dining hall got very busy but we were always able to find a table. Negatives included poor all inclusive wine, use of single use plastics to provide drinking water (please install hydration stations), poor selection of dairy free food and milk e.g. oat milk, margarine, plant based yogurts etc. Our room was good, with a free to use room safe, nice walk in shower and good beds. The balcony was large but didn't have sun loungers, which was a real shame. Due to the hotel's location on the front we enjoyed some really nice walks along the promenade, most of which is pedestrianised. Buses are frequent and cheap. Overall, we had a really pleasant.

Six years later
We spent a brilliant week at the Riu Paraiso from the 13th March. This is our 4th stay here, but our last stay was in 2019, and the hotel has had a refurbishment since. Upon arrival we were made welcome at reception and upgraded (as Riu diamond members) to a large suite with a comfy double bed large bathroom with shower gel, shampoo and conditioner provided . kettle and mugs with a selection of teas, which you can replenish at one of the self-serve stations.(We always take our own tea bags). We had a double balcony giving us sea and land views. We were on the old palace side of the resort, which meant walking the yellow brick road to get back and forth from the main hotel restaurants and bar areas. (keeps your steps up) Since our last stay, a lot of changes have been made. Firstly there is now a 24 bar on the same floor as the reception, with relaxed seating, and this is also where the late night time snack area is situated. Down the stairs is where the three restaurants another bar and the entertainment area are situated, and also access to the activity pools and day time snack bar (Pepes). which opens at 10.30am and does a limited late breakfast for those who fancy a layin. Hot and cold snacks available until late afternoon The main restaurant has an extensive buffet food area, and there are lots of tables both inside and out. We never had a problem finding a table, at any meal time, and the quality of the food was excellent, and very varied. Drinks in the restaurant are self-serve, wine beer or soda. Cava is also available on a Sunday morning with breakfast. The other two smaller restaurants are also buffet service and you need to book either at reception or the easy option is via the Riu app.Two sittings per night and one is canarian and the other is asian inspired. Again we enjoyed the food served at both of these. Here wine is served to your table. Over on the old palace side of the hotel, you will find the Tui rep desk, a shop selling a good selection of items and clothing. A small gym, hairdresser and spa. There is another pool located here, which is quieter and more relaxed, and another snack, and drinks bar. Hot and cold snacks are served here all day as well. You will also find self-serve drinks machines (beer/wine and sodas, and coffee) situated near the bars. The hotel location is opposite playa de los pocillos beach, with easy access into either Matagorda or Puerto del Carmen., and the main bus route runs along the promenade. However what made our holiday special was the friendly and helpful staff from all the departments at the hotel. Always smiling and happy to engage in conversation, with a special mention to the management member who was there all day and evenings and was so hands on and engaged with the guests. So thank you and we will be back.
