    "Good" not "great"

I would say our experience at the resort itself was overall "good" not "great." We were unfortunately stuck with a room with 2 double beds and no offer for upgrade when we checked in. Actually, no mention of the beds at all when we checked in - they just gave us our room # and we were somewhat surprised when we walked into our room. The beds were extremely springy - maybe okay for kids but extremely uncomfortable for us as we felt like we got airborne any time we had to shift slightly in the bed. And, only one small rug in the room between the beds left it feeling very sterile and bare. Even making sure our patio sliding door was shut at all times to prevent condensation in our room, the bedding always seemed to be the slightest bit damp, and towels never seemed to fully dry. Arriving after a long exhausting day of travel and getting somewhat settled in our room, we decided it wasn't worth the fuss to try to upgrade especially since another couple of our friends mentioned they tried to upgrade to a room with a king bed and the concierge said there were none available. The small bathroom in our room consisted of a rainfall shower head somewhat crudely dropped in above the center of a tub. Water pressure / temp was totally fine. The sink in our room drained very slowly and easily filled up. Not a huge deal. Overall we felt the room was very "basic," for lack of a better term. Felt like your run-of-the-mill hotel room, not necessarily a resort room in an exotic location like you'd hope. The food on the resort was hit-or-miss depending on what they were serving at the buffet, which was somewhat expected. When we tried to make reservations at the restaurants on the resort early in our stay, they only offered us extremely late reservation slots, like 8:30p and 9:30p. I'm guessing they set aside the earlier dinner reservations for the "Level" guests. We did enjoy the food at the restaurants a bit more than the buffet, although it seemed some of the food at Fish House seemed to make my wife and another one of our friends sick to their stomachs. The level of service we received from everyone at the resort was great (Felipe and Ian, especially), save for one - funny enough, the guest relations associate (can't recall his name currently) who booked reservations and experiences for the resort seemed to be quite unfriendly to my wife and our friend when they tried to make reservations a couple times - almost annoyed to be bothered. It was also a bummer that room service and some specific alcohol was an extra cost/not included in our "all-inclusive" booking. The grounds were beautiful, though - we spent the majority of our time at the main pool with the swim-up bar and the beach (nice and large), both of which were awesome. I realize it's this way with most resorts, but will say it was a bummer how early all the pools closed (6pm) and stuff to do at the resort after that time was pretty much limited to either food or hanging at either of the open bars. I caveat this all by saying I realize we did choose to book the least expensive room so our expectations should be tempered somewhat. I felt the pictures of the rooms and the info about what all they included on the resort website are not nearly enough to get a true impression of what you're getting into, and were even somewhat misleading. Still though, spending the money we did on the trip, we would have hoped for a little better. My suggestion would be that especially if you're a couple, book in the main building (not the garden view). The building we were in was definitely geared more towards families, I think - with the kids pool just outside and all the rooms with double beds. We saw some of the rooms in the main building and they seemed to be a lot nicer, and the King beds there seemed to be more comfortable overall. I wonder how much that would have affected our impressions of the resort, overall. Either way, like I said - good, not great.

A Perfect Vacation (Sorry, a little long winded)

We just got back from a very relaxing week at Melia Cozumel. This was our first visit to this property but will definitely not be our last. Right from the beginning we were impressed with the location and friendliness of the staff. It’s obvious that customer service is top priority at this resort. From the top managers Annette and Sandra to all the staff we were always made to feel special. We first met Alfonso in the Level check in area who welcomed us as our concierge and checked in on us everyday to see if we needed anything. His attention to detail was appreciated. We came to realize that attention to detail was a common theme throughout all the staff. A few notable mentions for us would be Francisco and his crew in the Fish House restaurant for diner. Having them sing Happy Birthday to my wife on our first night there was fantastic. We’d also like to mention Martin and Daniel and the rest of the crew in the Fish House at breakfast. Again, very attentive and friendly. Antonio and Sandra in the breakfast/Lunch buffet were always smiling and welcoming. We are beach people ( which is absolutely beautiful ) and to have Diego and Ian looking after us for the week was perfect. We really appreciated their professionalism and concern for our comfort during our stay. William in the lobby bar and sometimes pool bar definitely knows his way around the bar. Of course these are only a fraction of the staff who we interacted with but every other guests we talked to had nothing but great comments about all the staff. Our room was very well appointed and always clean and comfortable. We would not hesitate to recommend Melia Cozumel to friends and family and will definitely be back. If you made it this far and have any questions we’d be happy to answer them if we can.

Bait/Switch & Not great Front Desk staff

Requstd King beds for 2 rooms and didn't get. Just "sorry". Spent an hour at check-in arguing till they finally came up with King beds for both rooms. Also, toilet overflow downstairs buffet restroom flooded & soaked my shorts/underwear/sandals. I reported to a buffet employee while running dripping wet to my room to chg! I reported at checkout & spent an hour arguing with staff for a $35 discount at the end! They made me repeat the story 3 times in addtl to writing it down on paper, felt they didn't believe me!!! Very unconcerned about my humiliation & unapologetic! Horrible experience! They could have handled better. Staff at pool, Philipe, Ian, and Diego, & Maximillius in buffet room were top notch & should be rewarded!!!!! So friendly & accommodating & Ian's smile is a 10!!!

A relaxing ten days in paradise!

if you don't fancy waking up every day a few steps from a beautiful white sand beach then this place is probably not for you! Oh, and a white sand beach that is carefully raked flat each morning before you get up. We had read reviews before we arrived and were a little worried - but should not have been. We had booked the Level, which gave us some added extras, but also shared many areas with all the guests. The hotel is spotlessly clean, we could not fault our room, the beds were so comfortable. All the staff work so hard in all areas, and met each guest with a smile. The main buffet restaurant is clean with friendly staff waiting table for drinks. The food can be similar at times, but there is always plenty of choice and variety for all. Hot choices and cold. We have seen some reviews mentioning cold/tepid food, we did not find that this was the case. We only had one dish in ten days that was not overly hot - but no drama. The omelette man in the morning is a master of his craft! The themed restaurants are also very good, with the Fish House needing a special mention. Special mention also must go to Willien in the Hotel Bar, with his encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails. Unbelievably polite to every guest - even the more challenging ones! Praise also to Ian and Diego who work tirelessly all day, on the beach, to bring drinks to the beach area with smiles and professionalism. With note to the above all bar and restaurant staff work well, with or without offered tips. Being from the UK tipping is not natural but we soon learnt that $1 or 200MXN is the norm for most rounds. The evening shows were good a very good local guitarist, Karaoke, Mexican dancing etc - but not in your face so a choice whether you attend or not. Along the beach ti the right is a very pleasant 1 mile walk both ways, and if you time it right you can watch a perfect sunset on your way back. There are some local restaurants and the local town is only a $10.00 cab ride (each way) but we found enough to keep us in the hotel. So if you fancy some time in Paradise with a few good books, hot sunshine, peace and quiet, good food, a huge variety of drinks and just watching a pair of Pelicans dipping in and out of the sea then make sure you have a look at this place.

    Mole Taco

Jorge and Justo were entertaining and informative waiters. Willy and Erick the chefs provided excellent tacos in the new restaurant. My favorite was the pasteur taco with the fresh pineapple. I enjoyed my evening eating in this new restaurant.
