    Stay at Royal Club

Staff at Royal Club is fantastic. Hippolito, Wendy, Enrique, Willy, Isabel, Victoria, Raisa, Katheryn to name a few. Beach is the best. Pizza ala cart is good for a break from Royal club restaurant. Highly recommend Royal Club over other areas of this hotel.

    Leonardo and Rosa

We had an amazing experience. The staff was amazing and kind. Leonardo and Rosa from the Lobby Bar quickly became best friends with myself and my husband. We don’t every evening from 7 to 11 playing cards and having drinks. Leonardo and Rosa made my entire trip.

Occidental Punta Cana - a strange, beautiful and very mediocre meals week

My wife and I are just leaving from a week at the Occidental Punta Cana. We are First Club owners but have only been to the Occidental XCaret previously. Our last visit to XCaret was in 2023 with 25 family members. This trip was just to spend a nice week, get some warmth (we’re from Upstate NY), enjoy the beautiful island beaches, enjoy some decent food (were did have realistic expectations), and do some fun excursions. Check-In: we arrived around 8pm on Saturday night. Flight and shuttle from the airport were all fine. We went to the First Club check-in and they put us in a room in building 12. We walked over to our room and saw that this was a standard occidental hotel room - not First Club. It was nice enough - but there were hundreds of young Spring Breakers from the US and Canada and we just wanted a quiet room - so we walked back over to First Club and they explained that they were full, that we paid for a standard room and that our hotel room was actually larger than a First Club room. We had to explain that we’re were owners, this was our First Club owners week and we just wanted to be somewhere quiet - so he walked us over to a First Club room to show us it was smaller. We saw the empty, quiet room on the 1st floor of building 16 and said we preferred to be there. So we had to walk back to building 12, get out luggage, go to First Club to get our keys and then move into building 16. So no big deal - but why? We were First Club owners so why did we have to go through being put into a standard hotel room when there was clearly openings in First Club. The morning of the next day we made reservations at the Occidental restaurants - they told us there was only availability enough for us to book 3 reservations - not the unlimited that First Club owners should have. So we booked 3 that day. The next day, we booked 2 more with a different person at First Club. Again… why tell us they’re full and we could only book 3? Every night, at the different restaurants there was plenty of open seating so maybe it was a lack of staff? Not sure. Quick food reviews. Scale of 1-10. Breakfast at the beach buffet or First Club lobby: 8. They made omelets to order and they were good. Fruit was ok.. but not the fresh we’d enjoyed at Xcaret. Orange juice tasted like Tang and there was just limited choice. Staff was friendly - but not really attentive to requests like c fee etc. Lunches- 5. We usually ate a little later. The main buffet was just limited compared to the buffet at Xcaret and we often went to the food by the main pool and had French Fries and chicken. Not too special but we were hungry. Dinner: Seafood Restaurant: 7. I had soup that tasted like an ash tray but our entrees were pretty good. Shrimp and Salmon . Steakhouse: 6. The steak was more like a Salisbury steak but pretty flavorful. The vegetables were tasty but they literally provided 1 carrot, 1 broccoli spear and 1 little piece of corn on the Cobb. Potatoes were little too. It was ok. Italian: 5. I had chicken parm and my wife had a shrimp dish. Everything was from a bag it seemed. Frozen breaded chicken cutlet over pasta - tasted fun but something you could easily get in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Salad bar was also very limited. Mexican: 7. This was pretty good. Orient: 4. I had a sushi appetizer. Easily the worst I’ve ever had and I couldn’t eat it. The entree was another frozen dish. Just disappointed. Dominican food: 0. There was no Dominican food at this Dominican resort. Fresh Food: 2. Most of the food was frozen. Desert at the main buffet: 8. We got a few small scoops of ice cream every night and that was good. Drinks: 5. Available? Yes. Alcohol? I saw them poor alcohol out of a bottle butt don’t really taste it. House Wine and beer were Fine - but don’t expect to be blown away with local tropical drinks. Audio Quiet: there were literally hundreds of Spring Break folks there - fun to watch but not really our scene so we usually spent time at quieter pools. We were able to find chairs and we brought our own umbrellas from home that clipped onto the chairs so we brought our own shade. This was nice and we enjoyed chilling, reading by quieter pools. The beach was beautiful - but people would reserve chairs by putting a clip or towel on it so there was limited seating. We just not into the race and reserving chairs like that but we did go to the beach areas a little later in the day around 4 and there was usually places to sit or have a nice walk. The beaches were beautiful. Service: 5-8. Sometimes the staff wouldn’t even look at us. Sometimes they were super friendly. Sometimes we’d order a drink or coffee and they’d never come back. We always tipped - and felt badly for the staff because a lot of the Spring Break crowd was demanding, and didn’t tip at all. It felt like some of the staff liked people and others didn’t. Wireless: 6. They had wireless but not go. It’s a beautiful resort though so.. Excursions: 7. Both ATV and Monkeyland was fun but a 3 hour excursion was really 6 1/2 hours and be prepared to spend more $$ than you expected stopping at different places for “buying opportunities “. We brought home some Mamajuana and coco oil and pictures. Our advice. Bring about $200/$300 in small U.S. dollars so you can tip freely during your stay. You’ll get appreciated smiles along the way for showing your appreciation. Don’t expect solitude here - especially during Spring Break season. Don’t expect gourmet food here - maybe Royal Club was better - but the restaurants and buffet are mediocre at best. We left the resort a couple of times to take shuttles to our excursions - and passed through small villages and communities. This was really interesting to see and learn a little about. We had a nice time - the beach and island are beautiful, people friendly.

    Great service but old facilities

The staff in the main dining room gave us excellent service. Thank you to Sofie, Abel and Susa the egg man. Our room was comfortable but very old. Toilet wouldn’t flush on three separate occasions. The float didn’t always work. Service was prompt.

    OUR trip to Occidental Grand

Just returned from a 10 day trip to the Occidental Grand ,here are my pros and cons Pros. This resort is very beautiful, the grounds are well kept up, Workers and staff are very friendly, the food at the buffets was good we loved the al la carts ate ate the steak house it was very good I would recommend it , the Mexican was good for me but not for some of our friends , seafood my husband liked I don't like seafood so went to buffet that night , Italian was ok I wish I got red spaghetti sauce instead of green pesto it was yuk Spanish coffee in lobby bar was very good , loved the Malibu rum and orange juice. Service when we got there as First Club Members was fast . Our room was very clean but quite a little walk to the pool and lobby it was good for me but not so good for my husband with neuropathy we were in building 13 second floor elevator didn't work . CONS We went as a First Club Member our friends had the membership and they were NOT happy at all 1 they didn't get the rooms they wanted which she booked 3 months in advance 2 the elevator didn't work in our building 13 we were on second floor and my husband has neuropathy and walks with a cane 3 rooms were to be put close together there was 8 of us going 2 couples were first time ever going to the Caribbean 4 it was kids reading week and they were all university or college students VERY loud and was put in our buildings so needless to say not much sleep for us . 5 you could NOT get a lounge chair by the pool as people would get up early in the morning and save them then go on a excursion the whole day so we couldn't get those chairs. 6 music is very loud both at the lobby and pool . There is so much more I could say like not being able to get to swimming up bar with all the kids and running out of beer for 4 hours just before the pool closed up . We were thinking of becoming First Club Members be we changed our minds after all the bad service our friends that have the first club membership got .
