There are pros and cons to this resort.

We saw pros and cons at this resort. Pros 1) there was lots of room in the pools 2) housekeeping was quick to respond 3) rooms were not always done but we called guest services and they came and did them 4) gluten allergies were well taken care of by chef Abdani—amazing how attentive and careful he was 5) loungers there were lots of choices 6) beach had seaweed but that’s part of nature and they can clean it only so much and I didn’t mind walking around it 7) resort size is good for a family. 8) bar staff and activities workers were amazing. Now the cons 1) good luck getting a reservation in restaurant if you’re not a privelage guest. We tried to get on at 8 for 3 mornings (not want you want to do on holidays) and we ended up getting none. We approached guest services were told a) get on earlier -no use b) they can’t do anything (they can if you argue enough-which sucks on your holiday) c) bit more options poolside for food would be good d) the evening shows were a miss. We had karaoke one night in theory but ended up being 3 days of it (the talent night is pretty much karaoke and the diva show felt the same). d) night DJ wasn’t there our last night. The reason I won’t give this resort higher than a four star is because I don’t feel that I should have had to argue for space in the restaurant for our family because we were not privelage members. I was told by another guest I can offer to buy a bottle of wine and sign a paper which would cost $100 and I would get a spot. I am not keen on bribes as I do know who they will be bumping. It’s not fair to those other people. I finally talked to Ana who talked to the manager of the foods and drink and they got us in. I feel this was not the ideal way to do it. At one point we had been told by Punab to come at 6:00 to the Japanese restaurant and he would be there and he would see what he could do. We went with our senior parents (one walks with a cane) in the rain and initially was told by the lady at the front there was no one named “Punab” she finally admitted he wasn’t working. I felt the evasive attitudes were tough to deal with. Again, fix the reservation system-don’t pretend privelage guests don’t get access one night before. I personally would only stay if I got a great deal but if I’m paying for privelage I might as well use that extra money at another resort that is more equal in their treatment of guests.

    Would not come again

They advertise as a family resort , and yet we could never book for 12 family members together in a restaurant . If you are not a privilege member you won’t get in more then 4 people if you get up at 8 am and try and book the same day , only the privilege members get to book the day before . The food at the buffet is ok but the bowls are always empty . They can’t keep up with the demand. After New Year’s Eve the next day was all left overs for lunch , which was fine but empty . And nothing fresh at all but the bread and the lettuce . The bathrooms are not maintained paper always on the floor and Sandy and several had broken paper holders i reported a lock on a door which kept a woman locked in , for 10 min till I let her out , came back the next day and the same bathroom had a lady begging to be let out same bathroom stall . Maintenance ?? As usual if you don’t get down and put your towel down on a chair at 7 in the morn you don’t get a chair around the pools. And people drop their towels and don’t ever use the chair . There are a few very nice waiters and they do try very hard . But for most was an effort to even say good morning or smile . The pools are nice and clean , the rooms are spacious and clean , we asked 6 months in advance to be close together in rooms since we had 6 rooms and we were spred between 3 floors and 2 diff buildings after notifying the resort well ahead . The beqch is narrow, and the water is not clear for snorkeling at all . Would I come back ? Not a chance . We travel a lot and this would be the last place I would come again .

    Great trip last March

We went last March and I really thought I'd reviewed it then but I must have just left my review on the facebook page. At any rate, there were a few things that could be improved but all in all it was fantastic and I found little to complain about. It was a good experience so we rebooked and actually are leaving to come back in just a few days with our two adult daughters. In March, we stayed in El Beso, and loved it. I will say our bed was "weird", they shove two together and call it a King. It was huge, we called it the family bed as you could probably fit 5 people in it. It was funny but worked. We loved the El Beso area and restaurant and ate there a lot of breakfasts and lunches. The sandwiches were a little inconsistent. One day we'd love them and the next they'd be dry but didn't bother us too much, the spinach dip appetizer was always great. We loved the Blue moon (which is also our favorite at Royale) and the Italian was probably second fav. We meant great friends at the pool that we now keep in touch with on FB (first time we've ever done this, and we've been going to Mexico at least once a year for like 15 years or so). Bowling alley was a fun divergence from the usual one night. Didn't do too many shows, caught bits of a couple but we weren't too impressed. Spa experience, as in the massage and pools/steam etc. was good, but place needed a little help. We had to ask for towels, there was lots of water on the floor in the locker room etc. They said it was someones day off and that was why but still... Going home we reserved a changing room, we wouldn't do that again. It took a long time. We had to wait in the reception line to get it. Then went there and it was occupied, waitied again, they made phone calls, ultimately sending us back to the same room. All-in-all it wasted 45 of the last minutes of our vacation and though we made our transportation, it was close. I would pay the extra and keep our room for those hours next time if at all possible. Those are the highlights/lows I remember. We'll see how it is in January and I'll try to write another review sooner this time!

    Good hotel, needs improvement

The hotel is good for someone who does not like walking a lot. Everything is close by, since hotel is small. Food is hit or miss. Juice bar is a nice feature, but it needs to be open as advertised in the morning. Buffet food is tasty, but there is only one buffet and lines get long at peak times to get in. Reservations for restaurants need to be done at 8 am, by 8:10 they all gone. Resort definitely caters to guests that bought privilege, almost at expense of other guests. Entertainment is lacking compared to other resorts we have been to. There are activities during the day, like beach volleyball and soccer. There is also pickleball on one of the tennis courts, but you need to bring your own paddles and the net needs replacement. Beach has huts and there is a good amount of them. The water had some plastic stuff floating and there some of it on the beach, they need to do better cleaning. The coffee shop is great for pastries and caffeine all day.

    Great Resort

A la Cartes: Ate at Blue Moon, Sensai (hibachi), Hacienda Los Girasoles (Mexican), Ritratto d'Italia (Italian), Villa Marina (Brazilian) - These are listed in order of best to good. They were all quite good with enough options for everyone. Other Restaurants: Route 66, Casa Del Mar (buffet), Ocean Burger - ALL of these were quite good Drinks: many places to get any kind of drink; quite a few options Pools: not heated, but when it is so hot, they don’t need to be Beach: lots of seating with nice beach. They clean the seaweed a few times each day. Lobby: very big with lots of sitting Rooms: rooms were decent with each room having a big shower, bathtub, and rooms were decent size Hotel staff were always polite, cleaning, and put on great shows in the evening.
