Detailed Review of RIU Hotel in Mexico: A Disappointing Stay

    • Food Quality: Subpar, with poorly prepared meals and low-quality ingredients. The only acceptable meal was breakfast; the rest were dreadful. • Room Conditions: Musty and damp rooms with poor ventilation. Basic requests like extra pillows or blankets took hours to fulfill. • Towel Policy: Inconvenient and unreasonable, requiring guests to return wet towels to the pool area daily to avoid penalties at checkout. • Room Key Issues: Key cards stopped working daily, forcing multiple trips to the distant front desk. Staff were unhelpful and rude regarding replacements. • Rude Staff: Consistently unprofessional and unhelpful across all departments, from front desk to housekeeping and food service. • Unjustified Cost: At $1,000 per night, the services and experience are far below expectations. Here’s a detailed Review of RIU Hotel in Mexico Our recent stay at the RIU Hotel in Mexico was deeply disappointing and a waste of money. Despite the steep $1,000 per night price tag, the experience was riddled with issues, from poor accommodations to unprofessional service. Food Quality and Dining Experience The food at the resort was shockingly bad. While breakfast was decent, the rest of the meals were made with cheap ingredients and lacked flavor. The six on-site restaurants all failed to deliver a satisfactory meal, prompting us to order UberEats daily. Basic requests like ketchup or milk were often denied, only to be reluctantly provided after repeated requests. Room Conditions The rooms were poorly maintained, with a persistent musty smell and excessive dampness. Clothes left in the room became drenched in moisture overnight. When we requested essentials like extra pillows or blankets, they took 2-3 hours to arrive after multiple follow-up calls. The overall lack of comfort was unacceptable for a resort of this supposed caliber. Inconvenient Towel Policy The towel policy was one of the most frustrating aspects of our stay. Guests are given towel cards that must be returned daily to avoid penalties at checkout. This meant carrying wet towels to the room, drying off, and then returning them to the pool area for a card—even late at night or in the cold. Explaining the impracticality of this, especially with children, was met with indifference by the staff. Frequent Key Card Issues Our room key cards stopped working daily, requiring frequent trips to the front desk for replacements. This was particularly inconvenient as the front desk was far from our room. Staff members showed little concern for the recurring issue, and one even rudely reminded us that lost or unreturned keys would incur charges. Rude and Unprofessional Staff The resort staff consistently displayed rudeness and unprofessional behavior. From the front desk to housekeeping, food services, and even bell staff, every interaction was frustrating and unpleasant. Basic requests were often ignored, met with hostility, or begrudgingly fulfilled after multiple reminders. Unjustified Cost For $1,000 per night, the experience was far below what one would expect. The combination of poor service, inadequate accommodations, and low-quality food made it one of the worst hotel stays we’ve ever had. Final Recommendation Avoid this resort. For the price, you can find far better accommodations with professional service and a more pleasant experience. Travelers deserve much more for their money than what RIU Hotel in Mexico offers.

    Fantastic Vacation!

We went for 2 weeks - great resort & great location. The first week, we were in a swim-out room facing the garden. It was very peaceful & quiet but we wanted more activity & sun so we requested to switch our room to the pool side. Riu was very accommodating & we enjoyed our 2nd week in our new swim-out room. Staff were amazing, especially Gary who ensured we had all the drinks we needed while in our pool! Food/buffet was exceptional & our first week was less busy so we never had to wait at any of the a la carte.restaurants. Selection of food was varied & the theme nights were awesome. The shows were entertaining, although the kids’ show could have been earlier. Overall, fantastic resort!

    Riu Palace Dec 14 - 21

Staff are amazing here, food was pretty good as well. Our room had a couple minor repairs that needed fixing so we called the front desk, a maintenance staff was up within minutes and fixed both issues. Only real complaint is how loud carts are in the hallway, but this is due to the tiles on the floor, a smoother surface would take care of that issue Overall a wonderful experience!

Our 3rd visit and we really enjoy this property

We fell in love with this property few years ago, and this was our 3rd trip to the RIU Palace in Cabo. The service is outstanding, and they always seem to be cleaning. The selection of food is almost overwhelming, so there's something for everyone. Our favorite was the poolside grill and buffet at the El Medano (also an evening steak house). Our favorite restaurant out of the five was the Italian restaurant, which was also right below our room. Since we were staying at the Palace, you also have access to their adjoining properties, the Santa Fe (think parties and waters slides), and the Baja (adults only). This time we went at the end of October and the temps were still in the 90's. Our best trip was in late November when it was in the mid-80's. I would suggest the guided tour to San Jose Del Cabo which happens every Thurs. and coincides with their art fair. Also the Caborey dinner cruise around the arch which is the largest tour ship and has a live band. There's a Walmart across the highway, but I not the kind of walk I really want to take while on vacation. Ride shares can drop off guests at the property, but you'll need to walk quite a distance to meet one for pick-up. Taxi's are about the same price though. We've been lucky and always stayed in an ocean front room on the north end of the property on the 3rd floor, this time room 2148 (the first-floor rooms start with "0"). We asked for a jacuzzi suite (corner beach fronts), however none were available. The north pool is the activities pool, and they play games throughout the day as well as offer water aerobics, so you don't feel like a complete slob with eating and drinking all day long! I think the only negative things I can say about the Palace are that the rooms aren't sound proofed & sounds echo, so it might be hard to sleep depending on who's around. Also, consider bringing a small power strip as there are very few electrical outlets in the rooms. I'm including a picture of the beach front room numbers for both the North and South ends, which I couldn't find online anywhere.
