not the best
You can tell this place use to be so nice. They've let it go. Tiles missing from pool and mold. Beach has vendors everywhere which is good and bad at the same time. We didn't feel comfortable leaving our stuff alone b/c there was always vendors walking by it. so one parent had to stay with the stuff while the other got to go play with the kids. Food isn't very good. Beds are terrible, Not comfortable at all. Our coffee maker was broken. I left a note for housekeeping saying that it was broken. They ignored it. So I called front desk to ask for another pillow and a working coffee maker. after 40 min they didn't come so I called again and the man was rude to me and said i had to give it time. Finally wrote a request on the app. 2 hours later they brought pillows after my kids were already in asleep and 2 hours later they sent someone up to look at the coffee machine. He found it was INDEED broke and told us we needed to get ahold of ,... go figure... housekeeping. So I wrote another note and put HOUSEKEEPING on it on the coffee maker and asked if we could get another coffee maker. After our rooms were cleaned we STILL had the broken coffee pot. we asked 4 times for a working coffee maker and they would never give us one. The waterslide my kids really wanted to try was down so we didn't get to do that. I will say I am very glad they have a dr right there at the resort down the road. People will tell you to go to the monkeys and feed them, Don't do this. I got scratched and ended up at their dr. The dr office was great and handy. So that is a positive. Overall I wont be going to a Riu hotel again.

Memorable stay
Really nice resort. We stayed in the new rooms which were super deluxe. There were a few hiccups (alarm going off at 6 in the morning, telling us to evacuate (false alarm) and the air conditioner dying - but it got fixed) Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The hotel and grounds were kept very clean. The food was great - what a selection! Loved Splash Water World. It was great to have two separate pool areas. The lunch at the new pool was a great idea since you didn't have to dry off or have shoes on, unlike the older pool area out front of the resort. Lots of options for day excursions. So glad we chose Riu Guanacaste.

Great location and service, awful food and pools
This hotel is in a beautiful location, but it is extremely dated. The service was excellent. The food at all the restaurants was awful. The pools were filthy and the swim up bar was disgusting as it was packed with people who didn't get out of the pool the whole day. Yuck! This was probably a fabulous hotel in it's day, but that day has long since passed. We will not be back!

Disappointing
We stayed at Riu Guanacaste January 11-18, 2025. We came back there because we loved it when we first visited nine years ago. Now we were unpleasantly surprised. Rooms are so outdated! They still use a regular key with a room number tag attached. Half of outlets don’t work. AC is barely working. No toiletries were provided. Had to ask for towels every day. Buffet food so mediocre. Meat and fish are always overcooked and dry. Water in the pool is so murky, even in the morning after the “cleaning”. It smells like urine around the pool. They don’t clean the beach at all, because it’s a public beach! Beach chairs so old and dirty. But the “best” of all: on the fourth day of our stay, we discovered that $400 from the wallet that was in the safe are disappeared! We complained to manager, who mentioned that we were not the first one who got robbed! So, this is an ongoing situation in this hotel. And also, when we started to pack, my husband discovered that his sweater is missing. So disappointing.

Would recommend!
Staff was friendly and helpful! I would say some of the best food I’ve had at an all inclusive resort in a long time.
