Lovely time in Vallarta, thanks Carlos!

Nice all-inclusive with good food and services. Carlos Miranda and Jose Becerra are very friendly and accommodating butlers! We really enjoyed our time, and felt like we were always taken care of. Great variety of food options and pools to relax.

    A little tired

The resort and hotel aren’t truly a 5 star. More like a really good 4 star, so if you have reasonable expectations, you’ll do just fine here. First the good: Carlos, our concierge/butler was amazing !! Very attentive and quick to respond to any and all needs. The staff was also very friendly and attentive. The swim out rooms and semi-private pools are a fantastic feature and we highly recommend these rooms. Then the just average: The food was just okay. Nothing too fantastic and nothing terrible, just okay. We are pretty sure the drinks were watered down because there’s no way we could drink 10 double vodka’s in a day, without a wicked hangover in the morning, but that’s exactly what we were doing at Secrets. And now the downright bad: As others have stated, the incessant upselling is annoying and intrusive. Management should eliminate this immediately and let the guests decide and request what they’d like, not have all this hard-selling crammed down our throats. Overall we had a good time, but I doubt we’d return. The almost constant construction put a damper on things. The chemicals they were using was quite offensive. They were relining a water-feature in the main lobby and they were painting/rolling this horrible chemically smelling stuff and the smell was all through the resort, even down by the pool. Another example is this poor guy jackhammering a rock, in the scorching sun, right beside the pool. Bottom line: A solid 4 star and overall enjoyable ... especially CARLOS !!!

    Expected better for the price

Food quality and restaurant selection was good. Lots of loud construction which caused us to move rooms. The room we were moved to lacked hot water. No hot water in the spas which was disappointing. Overall my stay was just OK. I expected better considering the cost.

    Stay away

After checking in, we were handed off to a woman who was telling us about vouchers to use towards different activities during our stay. This was the first sign of incessant upselling during our stay. While this was an all inclusive resort, we expected everything to be taken care of. While of course there are always options to add to the experience, we did not want this. Therefore, we found it inappropriate for your staff to be pushy on buying some of these activities. This was just the beginning. Staff at the activities desks kept on pushing to do activities when we were just simply walking to the pool. Pool and beach staff were pushing for us to buy the cabanas and $10 coconut water. We were also extremely disappointed to learn that hotel guests did not have access to the Spa and that we had to pay an hourly rate to just use the steam and sauna facilities. I understand if massage services are chargeable but all 5 star hotels that I've been to have provided complimentary access to the steam and sauna for hotel guests. We really did not appreciate this. We were staying here to celebrate my birthday, which was on the day we checked in. Upon checking in, nobody wished me a happy birthday. Most Hyatt properties I stay at have always acknowledged all special occasions (which was noted on the reservation). Upon arrival at my room, we didn’t see any birthday amenities. The first room we were given was not in acceptable condition. The room was not properly cleaned (the shower still had a bunch of hair in it). There was also no hot water. Fortunately, we were able to change rooms. I will say the room was well appointed, with comfortable beds and pillows, despite the room feeling aged due to the nature of the aging property. The soaking tub and balcony were nice. The AC worked really well too. The service could have been a little better. When we requested the room to be cleaned or room service trays to be picked up, they were never done, despite the app saying so. Fortunately, this was better towards the end of the stay. I will say all of the staff were very kind, polite and friendly throughout our stay (love how they always respond with "my pleasure"). Shout out to Isabel in housekeeping who took care of the 8th floor rooms and Brenda who was the hostess for Market Cafe in the morning and Tamarindo in the evening. The pool and beach areas were not nice. The pools were not clean. The beach was not nice either with the large number of vendors coming to the hotel area to try and sell their goods. The waiting staff were kind and attentive, but a little pushy with the alcohol. The non-alcoholic drinks made were way too sweet. The music was too loud and not relaxing at all. Definitely not a 5 star luxury, classy vibe that we were expecting. Just a lot of drunk middle aged people. The food was probably one of the worst parts of the stay. My partner did not feel well after eating any of the food. He had diarrhea the whole stay and felt nauseous at times. These symptoms improved when we returned home and ate better food. The food was very bland, had absolutely no taste and inauthentic (e.g. Bordeaux always ran out of escargots, Himatsu doesn't have real Asian food (I'm Asian. I know good Asian food when I taste one and unfortunately none were good) and even the local Mexican dishes were flavorless). We even left the resort one day to go into town just to get away from the drunk rowdy guests and enjoy better food in town. Another annoyance was the dress code for Bordeaux and Capers. I do not understand why you need a collared shirt and dress shoes. In Italy and France, you do not need such pretentious dress codes to have a nice meal (also we're at the beach...who brings dress shoes to a beach resort??) Overall, the stay was not pleasant. Definitely not a five star resort as advertised and we will certainly not be coming back to your or any Secrets/Dreams properties for that matter, nor be recommending it to our friends and family.
