Preferred Club Wild Orchid with Butlers

We have been to Secrets 3 times, and we did not know if we wanted to chance a fourth visit. We had 2 great experiences the first 2 times at Wild Orchid. The third time was not so good at St. James. The rooms were not done consistently and the turn down service was hit and miss. That is why we were hesitant to come to Secrets again. We booked the Preferred club at Wild Orchid with butlers this trip. That decision proved to be a wise choice. Our check-in was quick and efficient. Our Butlers, Adia and Devon were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. They arranged our dinners, and we never had to wait in line. If there were issues, they helped correct them. Our beach chairs were ready for us every day with a cooler of water and beer. Thanks to both for making our stay very comfortable. There was a major event that brought everything to a grinding halt. There was a labour issue where the staff walked out at the first part of our stay. The staff were frustrated with their situation and went out on strike. It only lasted the one day but it opened many eyes to the labour situation in hotels in Jamaica. During the strike our butlers kept us updated on the situation and eased our concerns. There was no housekeeping that date or the next. We paid preferred rates but did not get the service. We do not blame the staff for this. The hotel management was not seen during this time. There was no apology from the hotel, and it appeared that they did not want to communicate in any way with paying customers. They left that to the employees. During this time we saw staff take initiative and supply guests with water, drinks and information. I can’t mention enough the feeling the guests had toward management. Several years ago, I stayed at a Marriott that the staff went on strike. The GM of this hotel was in the lobby everyday talking to the guests, assisting with their concerns and being available for anything that came up. That was leadership! No at Secrets- many commented that they seemed to be hiding behind the staff that were helping the guests. There were some dinners that were great and other that were spoiled by poor service. At the Asian a la carte restaurant we were served cold entrées because the waiter serving us spent a significant time not doing his job. The food was probably in the kitchen waiting to be delivered. Another night Bordeaux was a disappointment because the food was cold again (different waiter) and the lamb was horrible. You could not cut the chops, so much fat and grizzle. We went to Breathless and had the same situation when we ordered the lamb. It was unedible. Even when we asked for a sharper knife, it would not cut through the meat. There were many bright lights on the staff. I mentioned out butlers, Adia and Devon. Our housekeeper Anna Kay was excellent. We learned that the days that were missed she was off. Hotel leadership dropped the ball to cover her days off. The beach staff, Shereece and Kerry Ann always remembered what we liked to drink and at what time. DeonDre was one of the lifeguards that worked on the preferred beach. She had a great sense of humour and everyone loved talking to her. A small encounter with a towel concierge, Jordan O’Connor (age 24), made us feel like we were valued as visitors to the hotel. He was collecting towels one late afternoon and stopped to say hello and asked where we were from. During our conversation, his phone rang and I asked if he was going to answer that. His answer was that he can call them later, presently he was talking with us. That impressed my wife and myself a great deal. That is customer focus! Coco café was a great spot for coffee. We loved our cappuccino in the morning and our Jamaican coffee served up by Erica in the evening. If we go back for a fifth time we will book in the preferred section of Wild Orchid and have the butler service again. We love the people of Jamaica. They are friendly and warm. In every resort you meet staff that may not be having a great day. The overwhelming majority of staff at Secrets will greet you with a big smile or thumbs up!

    Stephen Cummings

I would like to extend my gratitude to Stephen for delivering exceptional customer service to my family and me. He provided top-notch support and humor, making our experience even more enjoyable. His assistance was invaluable, especially since some of my family members have mobility issues due to knee problems. Thanks Stephen boo!

Don’t stay here. Food was horrible

The hotel is not kept up. The Rooms were dirty upon check-in. I have stayed at this property at least five times and this was the worst experience ever. Frontline staff is rude. The food choices are ridiculous. Waited two hours each night to eat. Bad experience from beginning to end.

    Not a 5* experience 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Secrets wild orchid stay 11th November to 18th November 2024! Room 2147! What can I say.. we arrived around 7pm on Monday 11th November, we checked in pretty quickly all because I let them know how tired we were considering we had travelled from the uk and had be awake the best part of 19hr…. but was still then sent to another table where they try to sell you everything/anything 😳 then try to get you to arrange a meeting with the sale team for a “special” Hyatt promotion! Avoid like the plague, we didn’t turn up but met some people that had and it’s basically like a time share! Waste of time as it’s a 90min chat at breakfast and a full on sales pitch! We had a junior suite garden view room, the room was big, whirl pool bath, clean and tidy, everything we needed was there when we arrived. Tuesday 12th the hotel workers went on strike, it was mayhem, people helping themselves from the bars till midday, the room was left uncleaned, limited food available, it was a nightmare day! Wednesday 13th everything was back to normal, however our room was NOT cleaned, no clean towels nothing (since Monday) we had to ring reception 4 times to keep requesting clean towels and for the mini fridge to be restocked, in the end I had to go there in person and complain! We did finally get clean towels and mini fridge service (room was not cleaned) Thursday 14th: TUI rep was on site, after messaging them since Tuesday regarding the lack of services for a supposed 5*+ hotel, I finally got a room clean, clean towels, bedding, cups ect and even the bedtime turn down service which we should get every night!!! Friday 15th: we left resort to do the dunn’s river falls and bob marley trip (best day ever, and it was refreshing to leave the resort) we arrived back at the hotel to a clean room, clean towels ect which was good! No night time turn down service. Friday night food was a Jamaican buffet, food was nice! Saturday 16th: room was cleaned, clean towels given…. Still no refresh of tea/coffee/creamer… and we had to call to have the mini bar restocked: Sunday 17th… arrived back at our room at 5pm, it hadn’t been clean and no services, ring reception and was told they would contact house keeping… I expect rooms to be cleaned in the morning not evening… very very poor service!!!!! Monday 18th… time for us to leave the hotel, our collection was at 2pm local and check out was at 12pm local… we don’t ask how much late check out was as we didn’t feel like we needed it. The food: Mexican: amazing, very large amount of food, but good choice and very tasty. Blue mountain: nice, curried goat was lush, very flavoursome! Italian: nice, smallest portion of calamari I have ever had (ask for 2/3) otherwise the beef tenderloin was lovely. Barefoot grill: amazing- jerk chicken and chips, delicious!!! French: we had to try the escargot, and then had the rib eye steak, amazing meal! Highly recommend you visit here… Asian: you need to book to sit with one of the chefs, by far the best experience we have had at the hotel! Food was amazing and the service/entertainment was outstanding by the amazing chefs! Bars: I really struggled to get an aperol spritz all week, which is a shame as that is my fav drink, I ended up drinking peach Bellinis they were nice, but I was really hoping to be able to drink my 1st choice drink. Sunbed situation: a lot of the sunbeds seem to be reserved 🤷‍♀️ so unless you get out early by the pool areas you have no chance of getting a decent bed! Some of the sunbeds need replacing and they need cleaning, they are filthy! Also the pool area could do with a good spray down and clean every evening, I don’t think it was cleaned at all why we were there for a week!!! Entertainment: it’s ok, but if outside the space is small and the piano bar can’t cope with the amount of people it needs to serve. If it’s inside the room gets a little stuffy, but plenty of seating and a bar inside. As someone who travels a lot, being an airline cabin manager, I wouldn’t say this hotel was being kept to the standards of a 5* resort, the staff on the most are very happy but there are a few who really don’t want to be there. And everyone expects a TIP 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ for me and my husband it was our first time to Jamaica, this holidays cost us £4850 and it’s safe to say we the service we have received we would NOT book a Hyatt owned resort ever again… it’s not the luxury we expected for the amount of money we paid and the expectations we had from being told how amazing it is…. All in all, there were highs and lows to our week in Jamaica but we made the best of every situation, we do feel that unless your preferred club the service is a little crappy and they are all for the preferred club people. This is my personal and honest review of the hotel, I know many will have had different experiences and that is to be expected. But I wouldn’t personally come back to this hotel and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone I know. 🤷‍♀️

    Terrible experience!

Overall very disappointed with my stay at Secrets Wild Orchid. Our room was only cleaned once during our 5 day stay. We had to beg for clean towels but ended up taking the towels from the pool because we never got them. Very limited staff and that staff was not friendly at all. We had bartenders arguing over tips right in front of us. On one of the days they only had two restaurants open and no room service. Our overall safety and security was tested on Tuesday because 75% of the staff was protesting in front of the resorts. When we asked what was going on the resort would just say things were delayed because of the tropical storm… that didn’t even happen until Thursday afternoon. I’ve stayed at other Sercrets before and this is by far the worst one I’ve been too. Stay away but if you do come bring bug spray.
