    Discovery resort mostly positive experience

The guides are spot on (cheers to Julio) and it is quite nice to get the activities already scheduled if you really don’t want to think about planning your holidays completely. The cocktails are well done and the food is mostly good, some restaurants seems to be a hit or miss, but there are a lot of options, so most people should find something to their liking. Avoid at all costs any lunch meeting with the time share sellers, massive waist of time, unless you negotiate the gift beforehand.

    Snorkeling

Fun snorkeling adventure with three stops. First was over a reef, where we saw a ton of fish, lobster, stingrays. The second was a stop to see the are full of starfish. The third was at the sandbar where we swam with the stingrays. Drinks, including beer, and snacks were included. Julio is a wonderful tour guide. We were only a few English speakers on our you and he always made sure we understood what was going on.

We can’t wait to come back!

This is approximately our sixth trip to the Explorean. We will be back! The staff is tremendous (adventure guides Jassiel, Bega, Armando, and El Guapo Don Julio make the excursions very fun). Claudia, Luis, and the other staff are great at the restaurant. It is clean, it is very nice having the beachfront open again and they’ve just finished renovating the pools.

    Disappointing

Arrival fine, nothing special. No welcome drinks. But quick and easy. Rooms … musty smelling but clean and spacious. Be careful of the step!!! We had chosen a king stand alone casita. Don’t think it translates to an English understanding. Every hut we saw had four rooms two on the first/ground floor, two on the second floor. Stand alone to be means Alone one building. It was ok our neighbours were all quiet. Just not what we had expected. Temp of room comfortable but light from thermostat is extremely bright. Shower moldy but large. Had hot water 4/7 days. Basket in morning… too late for us. We want to be up and out of the room before it even arrives.(730-8) one morning it just never showed up. It’s the same thing every day never changes. Two banana breads, juice and coffee no cream or milk though. Food…not to my taste. Explorean restaurant had very slow service at breakfast and order not right but 45 mins to wait just went to the buffet instead. Explorean dinner … tried twice didn’t enjoy it. Service was better in the evening but the food was not. The a la cartes at the fiesta were much better food. Enjoyed the Asian, Italian, and Mexican. But would say the deserts are not great at any. Lack of communication will kill this resort for English speaking guests. The resort is geared for Spanish speaking guests. Asked multiple times about cooking classes I had seen online and the front desk sends you on a wild goose chase. No one knows where things are being held. I was told to find someone on the beach with a long sleeve shirt to ask them. Explorean had no activities on the resort everything was held in the fiesta. No one tells you a buffet will be closed on certain nights or that it’s been moved to another location. So if you don’t have a reservation you have no choice but to eat at the Explorean LOL khan. You don’t find out until you walk all the way there. I’m not a seafood person so the menus were very limited for me. I also suffer from a nut allergy and the menus DO NOT indicate which items contain nuts. The grill often would be out of guac and pico de gala, one man working the grill. Did well for being alone. The main buffet never had ketchup for eggs. I watched a server have to crawl over the grill restaurant to get a bottle for me. The buffet is small with a very limited variety. No pasta stations or crepes. Fruit always the same. Grapefruits, apples, pineapple, watermelons and melons. No banana or mangos. Likely lost weight on this trip. Steaks very fatty. Tamales tasted like a sock. Deserts were bland or stale. No self serve bar as others had mentions in their reviews. There is however a secret menu on the beach you can ask a server to bring you food. Which no one will tell you about prior to. So you can order right from the servers to your beach spot. We found out on our last day. The drinks were good especially the bloody ceasers and mango margaritas. The pool at the Explorean was open but the hot tub was warm 1:7 days. The pools quite dirty from all the foliage around it. It gets very busy with kids. The fiesta main pool was closed still but was filled with water so likely opening soon and looked beautiful. The Beach… there isn’t one. It’s huge stairs down to the ocean or ladders. This is not good for kids or mobility issues. It’s very wavy and strong currents. But if you love to snorkel and can swim well swim to the left of the resort pier. The marine wildlife and reef is beautiful. Saw a nurse shark, starfish, barracuda, jelly fish, fans and trumpets and lots of colourful fish. Grounds..jungle feel with beautiful trees and plants. Lots of birds and lizards. Saw one snake. Resort puppy is very skiddish. Excursions…. Here is where the resort does succeed!!! If it wasn’t for Gerardo, Julio and Armando I likely would have been looking for another hotel. We did the boat snorkel it was amazing. The guides take very good care of the patrons. You get to see so much marine wildlife. The boat is slow so it’s not a ton of snorkel time compared to travel time. The buggy tour was fun but could skip the tequila seeing it’s not even made in Cozumel. The bike trip to the cenote was amazing. We saw a crocodile and had our pedicures done by fish in the cenote lagoon. Gerardo and Julio were fantastic. Couldn’t even describe in words how welcoming and safe they make you feel. When my brother in laws chain fell off in the home stretch of the ride Gerardo was there to pick up the bike and drive him back. Huge shout out to the activity/excursion team you guys made our vacation much more memorable and enjoyable. Luis offered us a special dinner for being sent on wild goose chase to find activities and the no hot water in our room but we ended up skipping it because we did not like any of the Explorean menu. He was attempting to make things better. I had asked about table side crepes as I had seen in other reviews but he said no they didn’t have that. Would I return? No. Would I recommend to others? No. Unfortunately I think this resort is geared to local time share holders who speak Spanish. Too much language barriers to ask even a simple question.

    Aerolito Cenotes.

Great experience. Superfriendly and knowledgeable guides (Julio and Gerardo). Highly recommended experience a must go, always looking for the safety of everyone on the trip. The cenote was beautiful and we saw cocodriles. The water wasn't cold good for a swim.
