Bahamas Always Has my Heart ❤️

My fourth time to the Bahamas but second time to Viva Wyndham. Some staff remembered us from when we visited 7 years before! Love how fast it is to get to the hotel from the airport especially travelling with children. Hotel room was fine, its simple, cleaned daily, towels changed. Shower pressure was a bit slower but this is not what we came for. FOOOD and drinks is #1 Well flavoured and we love the desserts! January is a breezy time to visit and cools down at night requiring a jacket. Shows are excellent especially the Lion King special. The Italian a la.cartes portion sizes are huge. I'd definitely come back since I feel comfortable and we love the beach. The snack bar at the beach is the best I've seen since there is so much variety! We will see you again Freeport

    HARD PASS

Trip March 15-22, 2025. This was a last-minute trip I regret. Even though it had some spotty reviews there were also some good ones, so we decided to take a chance. The trip began with a flight delay by AA that already cost us a one day delay. We booked this trip through Apple vacations which outlined the many perks we would receive at this resort. Most never happened. When we finally arrived at the resort (a day late) reception desk told us check-in was at 3 pm. We kindly responded that a room should already be available since we were supposed to be here the day before. After a while we were given room keys and sent on our way ( according to Apple we were suppose to receive a welcome cocktail and help with luggage to our room - no one to help) The first room faced the street and was on the 2nd floor. As fairly fit 60+ yr old women, we still did not want a 2nd floor room. After some discussion we were given a new room on the main level. It was dirty, the air filter appeared never to have been cleaned, the sliding door did not close all the way (big security issue), bathroom didn't even have a TP holder and no floor mat, the shower did not feel clean (I showered with flip flops on) . There was an overwhelming smell of disinfectant they made our eyes water. According to Apple we were to have a superior room (far from it). We then went to make reservations at one of the 3 upscale restaurants and was told since we were a no-show from the previous day all reservations were booked already. With several red flags already, I tried getting a different room. Oh and let's not even discuss all the feral cats running around the resort, best not to keep your slider open to air out the room because the cats will come inside ( I am very allergic to cats) . So told no rooms available. Next day 3/17 started out okay till in the early after noon as the smoke from surrounding brush fires ( which started the Wednesday before) finally encroached on our resort and had ppl banging on our door to evacuate to the beach since the fire was right across the street. In a panic we grabbed wallets and passport in our bathing suits and left. For almost an hour we stood on the beach. NO ONE from the resort ever came to communicate with us. We finally went back to our room to pack our things. I again tried to get a room closer to beach and away from the thick smoke that was coming into our room and more importantly our smoke alarm never went off and about 500 feet from our room, we could see 2 propane tanks! Yeah we did not feel safe at all. No help what so ever from staff. I will say Apple was helpful to a certain extent but it didn't seem to make much difference. Late that evening we started looking for a new hotel to move to for the night. Once we gave them a room # they magically had a new room for us to move to (thank you Apple) . The room was reserved for Timeshare members and although it was a step up from what we had it was still a dingy room. Our biggest gripe after that was that smoke filled the resort every morning for the next 4 days. We had symptoms of smoke inhalation. The staff all had masks but none for guest. The dining area was so filled with smoke that you just wanted to get in and get out. All our clothes wreaked of smoke. They could have brought in industrial fans to clear the area but never did. They acted as if this was no big deal. Some staff were just as upset. Bottom line there was NO COMMUNICATION. The resort is old and needs MAJOR repairs. The food was okay. The rooms need renovating. For the amount we paid I could have stayed at a LUXURY hotel in Miami! Next time I will trust the reviews. You should too.

    Beware....

This resort was awful. The rooms are old and desperately need remodeled. The beds are miserably hard. They had limited food options, were constantly out of drinks, including beer and Diet Coke, and the service was terrible. The "sports bar" is not that at all! It's a sticky floored pool table room. We relocated to a new resort after one night. Don't book here. The worst part is how rude the staff were and unwilling to deal with our issues. Our group of 15 had several other unique issues to our stay that I'm not even mentioning. There are far better options (like the Lighthouse!) that you should explore first. This resort is not worth your time and money!

    Would never go back

We were to be at Viva for two weeks. Our experience there was subpar to say the least and within the first 2-5 days we were terrified for our health and safety due to fires all around the resort. Came in on Sat March 15. First issue was trying to book on the app for the a la carte restaurants. It didn't recognize that our room was registered so we asked for assistance at guest services. The woman, very stern and unfriendly, said we had to do it through the app and said they were closing and to come back in the morning. We did and she ended up actually helping us book. Still couldn't crack a smile however. There were a handful of staff that seemed friendly but most were definitely not happy and didn't smile when you said good morning or hi. The buffet didn't have much selection but could find a few things that were ok but cold. Best option for breakfast is to stand in the only line for eggs made how you'd like. Also, the bacon was there and dished out only by the person making the eggs, if it was even available at all. The a la cartes are actually very good though we never got into the Mexican one. As for the fires, which we know was not the fault of Viva BUT Viva certainly was not at all prepared for this kind of event. Smoke would encompass the resort at night and upon questioning what was happening we were told it was under control and there was nothing to worry about. We took a day trip by cab into Port Lucaya on the Monday, so day three, we saw smoke and some burned brush in the area. On our way back there were actual fires and such thick black smoke that you couldn't see a car length in front of the car. The cab driver had to slow right down and put her four ways on. This was about a block from our hotel. When we got to our room we took pictures of the smoke coming into the resort and saw people with their luggage packed and sitting at a gazebo on the beach trying to call and get out. We also packed a "go bag" incase things escalated. Also at this point there is no electricity, room phones or wifi. Generators were running throughout the resort to run most things but the room phone never worked. Once again we are told everything is under control. Didn't sleep well and smoke was in the room. By Wednesday we were so scared we discussed how we could get out of there. Wednesday evening was the worst. We did find out that some people in a section were evacuated from their rooms, some to another resort and some to other rooms within the resort. We had to put wet towels around the door and in the crack of the patio door to keep smoke out. We also wore masks that we thankfully had with us. Very little sleep at this point. The lobby, theatre and buffet were engulfed in thick smoke and NOT ONE SMOKE ALARM WENT OFF!!! So Thursday morning we stood in the Sunwing office and demanded assistance as to where to go. Some people had a couple days left now and couldn't afford to move to another resort and left the office. A few of us stayed and waited for word from Sunwing. Individual cases, that's how they took the info, no one ever got a call with any kind of option. I stood in that office and had the rep there keep inquiring. Finally by 4pm we were on our way to Grand Lucayan at Lighthouse Point, a Sunwing affiliation. Though we had to pay a substantial amount out of pocket to do so. Our friend spent a day in the hospital there on oxygen treatment, steroid and antibiotic treatment by IV and had to purchase medication and puffers. I can say that in all of our travels combined, we have never experienced this kind of inhumane treatment. I can't believe that there were no protocols in place for emergency situations like this. Management basically hid from everyone, leaving staff to say they don't know what to do. No smoke alarms in the worst smoke I've ever experienced. Local residents were evacuated but the hotel was not. Everyone there including staff were severely in danger. It was not simply brush on fire but also garbage, asphalt shingles, vehicles, rubber etc. This incident may well cause lasting health issues due to inhaling God knows what kind of toxins and carcinogens. Shame on Sunwing and shame on Viva

The resort was awesome , fun and always had activities for guests. The staff were very friendly and went above and beyond to make sure you had an enjoyable experience. We enjoyed the food and the drinks. The beach was extremely beautiful and they had a lot of water sports and activities available. There was always a night show spectacular that was sure to leave you entertained. I would highly recommend going to this resort, it’s fun for the whole family!
