An Experience not to be repeated.

What a terrible experience Stayed 10 days and wow what a change from what the resort had been. First time back in 20 years. Having stayed many times. I remember it to be a resort with the two friendly parrots in the lobby, where one could go to their tower suite location by boat or tram, and if by boat, be entertained by the many bird species and foliage. Now completely devoid of any birds and boats permanently docked, so only trams or self walking for transport. Originally the resort had an executive lounge which was a nice feature. The resort requires a serious upgrade. The rooms also needed a lot of help, wet carpeting with mold from a defective air-conditioning. which was so called "remedied" by Hilton staff bringing in an air craft noise air blower. Ended up with a bacterial infection from the room experience. This resort is best left to memories of how it was. As to now, " never again!! ". Former Black card holder and now Diamond member

Think twice for a “family@ vacation

Situated in arguably one of the most beautifully kept grounds on the island with amazing ocean views and very temperate weather, is the Hilton Village WAIKOLOA resort. Well if you think your off on a great family holiday and staying at the Hilton Village hotel Waikakola where all your families dreams are made then think again… yep the pool area and lagoon are a great place to sit with the kids and enjoy a swim, but if the suns out then you need some shade. That shade will come at a cost of $90 USD in the small kids pool and gets more expensive as you move around, and for that you get half a day, isn’t that generous. On the second day we had to hire two of these shade cabanas at a cost of USD $184.00 ($292.00 AUD) I will say the staff poolside will bring an ice cooler and a few icy poles for the kids and the staff are just lovely. This unfortunately does not take away from the greed of this hotel chain, your next step is to buy a sorbet or ice cream at the pool shop for the kids , well be prepared to take out a second mortgage on your home because you are going to pay $12.59 for a single scoop ice cream in a cone so if you have three kids then bye bye $37-38 USD or the equivalent circa $64 AUD the day this was written Another note if you have young kids there was no life guard on duty at this pool complex so be alert, more chat cutting and profit taking. Now let’s talk about the other family attractions, oh yes there are water pedal bikes, floating mats, paddle boards and other floating toys but of course these are an extra cost. If you want to go for a meal with the kids good luck finding an eatery that is cost effective that’s not serving greasy horrible food, and may serve healthy meals not just dogs burgers and chips they don’t exist. There is a serious shortage of restaurants to cater to families I think there are three restaurants in the vast complex. all are over $30 USD a plate if you have young kids this is too expensive. Ok so let’s touch on arrival here, again very helpful and friendly staff so you have just travelled for 36 hrs crossed the international date line to arrive and check in which was seamless, now the challenge, the long march to your room, this property is spread over a vast area and there is no baggage service to your room and it’s a fair hike, there is a train that runs but not late and it’s slow you can out walk it so it’s an alternative but a slow one. So be prepared for this upon arrival. The rooms are tidy and clean the windows haven’t been cleaned for years well in our room any way (I did ask house keeping to get this sorted and was given the expected “yes sir “we will send someone over to do this and here we are checking out 4 days later not done, so lip service really not real service. You can’t see out into the grounds, this was obviously once a great family resort but now it’s a fading jewel. It’s understaffed it’s obvious the staff have been cut back and shops and services are closed it’s a ghost town’ a ghost town without a personality Now to the hidden costs, so now you have fronted up for a pre paid breakfast to be greeted by again the very friendly staff and advised there is a 15-35 min wait for a table depending upon what time you arrive here. That’s ok you finally get seated have your meal and bam! A bill to sign with a service levy of $44 usd for tips everyday this happens there apparently. And the final kicker is check out oh yeh, another bill for $48 usd per day resort tax which gets you a free water bottle and maybe an exercise class. They point out when you ask at checkout what did you get for this fee and it’s. It’s nothing useful. A note as well, we had adjoining rooms one for three kids under 7 the other for the baby and adults yet we were still charged the hotel fee for each room. So add $100 usd per night for a family room So a 5- and 4 night stay cost and additional $1500 USD across three rooms for our stay, when you add the breakfast charge and room fees for each if the rooms over 4 nights it’s a total rip off why not just put the hidden costs into the room rate and let the public decide weather they can afford that before they book. If you have hired a car which is a good move then be prepared to pay $38 usd per day to self park or $48 per day valet plus whatever tip you wish to pay when you park or retrieve the car. In my view as a hotel patron, self parking should be free, valet, well it’s a service so pay up. A car is handy because you will need to drive to the local supermarket where you can buy edible healthy food at still an inflated price but manageable and a great choice of fruits and fresh foods better choices for a young family. Another tip if you want to add an additional driver to the hire car it will cost you $15 usd per day per new nomination just another hidden fee So as a summary the rooms are over priced, clean enough but service is not great, we had three rooms here one of these has been without soap or shampoo for the entire 5 day stay even though we opted to have the rooms done daily. As a family we travelled from Vancouver and Western Australia to meet in Hawaii and looking back now I think a home based holiday would have been a lot cheaper better food and accommodation and no hidden fees in our country. Finally there are half a dozen pacific dolphins on site and trapped in a very small pool, these are large sea mammals and need open water I don’t understand how no one has Insisted they are released instead of charging families $200 to feed them, very very sad, this needs to be changed and these mammals need to be released into the wild . I hope this has given the reader a little insight into what to expect and be prepared, and don’t let these issues take away from the beautiful island chain Hawaii is enjoy.

    Great experience for the family

This was my third time staying on the big island. The first was at the Fairmont orchid and the second was a condo in Waikoloa beach resort. I booked the Hilton for the reviews of being the best kid friendly resort on the island. After staying there, this was absolutely the best spot for a family stay. They also gave us a surprise upgrade prior to our arrival. The room was updated and clean and the staff was very friendly and helped out with any questions I had (I didn't have any issues during my stay). The kids loved the pool, waterslide, and the lagoon. The lagoon has a beach, but there is no ocean beach. The other options for a resort with a beach are Mauna Kea and the Westin Hapuna beach resort, which are very pricey and aren't very kid friendly. We had no issue taking the short drive to Hapuna beach and spending the day there. We stayed in the makai tower since it was close to the lagoon, pool and the parking lot. KPC restaurant was delicious and the bananas foster dessert was amazing. The Hilton checked all the boxes for a fun family vacation on the ocean. If you have a family with younger kids, this is definitely the place to stay.

This is no longer the grand experience it once was.

Spent 6 nights. Went to the buffet breakfast which we found out is $55 per person so we walked out went to the market down the road where we got a nice breakfast for under $50 for two people. In their cafe a cup of large coffee which is medium size anywhere else is $7.00. Overall all the food places are absurdly priced. The room we got was an upgrade to a handicap friendly room which has a very strange layout including a toilet facing a floor to ceiling window to the grounds with a sheer curtain. The shower has not curtain or door. The closet is more like a walking closet. The automatic handicap door rarely closes and have to be forced closed. No handicapped person could do it. All room are very poorly lit and if you walk in there is no light switch anywhere and no lights in the ceiling. There was a balcony but it’s a large step up so one with a wheelchair cannot handle it. The dry cleaning is the most expensive I have ever seen in any hotel I stayed in including a true 5 star hotels. This is far from a 5 star hotel. It’s old and very dated with lots of rusted items all over the resort. The grounds are well kept though they charge you for everything but breathing. The train is running very slow and at times it’s 20 minutes beteeen trains and the boats are out of service. The tv in the room deflated does not have fox tv of any kind available most of the day while cnn and cnbc is available at all times. Most other tv stations don’t work all the time. If you want to write down something since they do not provide pen or pencil or a notepad. This Hilton is skimping on common items for guests. Housekeeping while is great they do not provide daily unless you request it. And if you want your luggage taken to the main lobby when you leave you must have them pick it up 2 hours ahead or bring it out yourself on the trek which can be 1/4 of a mile or longer from your room.

    Amazing resort and grounds

The grounds and amenities at this facility were 5 stars. It’s a massive resort that also has a tram running every ten minutes. Room was clean and a nice size. They had a nice coffee shop in one of the buildings. Restaurants are pricey. They do have a shuttle for $5 each way down to the King and Queens shops. Many people went to the island gourmet in the Queens for their meals and other food and grocery needs. Perfect hotel activities for families. Staff was very polite!
